    Hammerin' Hero Review

Hammerin' Hero is a side scrolling platformer for the PSP. You will be taking on the role of Gen as you try to protect the city from the evil corporation set to remake Japan the way they want it. You'll get the chance to explore 12 different levels defeat several different types of enemies, and face off against unique bosses. You'll also be able to change your ability set as you defeat the game.

Graphically this game is a mixed bag. The levels sometimes hit home and sometimes they don't. You're going to get the chance to run through a neighborhood, fight through a restaurant, a TV station, an amusement park, underwater, and more. The cut scenes are hand drawn with speech bubbles. The different looks your character has during the level look interesting and definitely far from looking the same.

Sound wise the game is average. My biggest problem is when you hit X during dialogue and you get a nice abrasive noise that you're going to hear again once you hit the X button to advance the conversation to the next part. Each character has a voice that all seem to match them, but none of them are very memorable.

The controls in the game are sufficient for the task at hand. You're going to have your jump, your attack, your  special attack combo, and of course your movement.

This game does have its fun, but its not enough for me. I feel like some of the game is cheap. There's times where I should be swinging at air that I hit, and then there's times where I feel like I hit, or dodged and the game says I didn't. There are different difficulties for the game, though I find it odd that the Easy one is locked in the beginning. Of course sucking it up constantly on a level will open that option up, but its kind of a turn off for people just trying to get a feel for the game. Another issue is the amount of hits you can take in a level, one, unless you are playing on Easy. I think because of the sometimes shotty collision detection this just ruins the game for me. The different costumes my character can put on really don't do anything for me, I only used the ones that made sense, and in almost every level except a few I just played with what I started the game with.

I'm just not sure about this game. I like the concept, and some of the feel, but in the end I don't feel that this game is worth the hassle you're toni to have to deal with. This game gets a 4.7 out of 10.

HITTING THE NAIL ON THE HEAD 0

Hammerin’ Hero is exactly what I look for in a hand held game. The game has simple controls and bite size levels. Many developers have attempted to recreate 3D games on the PSP with many mixed results leaving you disappointed more often than not. Hammerin’ Hero doesn’t fall into this trap. This game is pure classic 2D side-scrolling action. The game can be challenging but rewards the player for patience and perseverance. In this spiritual successor to the 8-bit classic Hammerin’ Harry, you pla...
