The Best open world game in years-
That title might be grabbing your attention and be urging you to say "But Ferginator GTA4 is the best open world game ever!!!" and to you i would say that the GTA series has never had any appeal to me, partially due to its juvenile approach to crime, whilst also trying to tell a serious story of criminals, thats not to say im a super serious gamer who dosen't want any humor in games as i loved Saints Row 2. Anyway thats a different argument for another time and besides Infamous has none of these issues.
Infamous is the next open world action game by Sucker Punch creators of the critically acclaimed Sly Cooper PS2 game series and while Infamous continues in this vein of gameplay its setting is far more dark and mature. You play as Cole McGrath a bike messenger who during a catastrophic explosion in empire city (totally unrelated to New York City) is gifted Electical superpowers but trapped in a city filled with chaos and strife.
You make your way around the game and slowly bring order back to the city as well as work out how exactly the catastrophe occurred and the origins of your powers. The story is very engaging the whole way through despite a very odd and left field ending that clearly sets the game up for a sequel.
The folks at Sucker Punch have clearly improved from the Sly Cooper games with Cole climbing around the city in a way that just feels natural, as the game goes on Cole unlocks new powers that can help with traversing the massive city Infamous is set in. Though many open world games have side missions Infamous sets itself apart by making the side missions mean something as completing them helps bring order back to the city.
The many main missions and side missions in the game will usually have a moral choice associated with them and some of them can be quite difficult to make whilst some can hardly be called decisions, another area of the moral choices that infamous excels in is how it makes you do the moral choice instead of just watching a cutscene.
The combat in Sly Cooper was very button mashy and thankfully the combat in Infamous is far improved, with you holding the left shoulder button the zoom you view in for an over the shoulder view and the right shoulder button firing this can seem very simple but over time more combat options become available such as shock grenades and several sequences were the player is given an unlimited source of energy to draw from allowing the player ot go all out with thier most powerful attacks.
The world of Infamous feels truly alive and as you go through the game you will conscientiously notice the consequences of your actions on the city in glorious detail that only the PS3 could present (yeah PC could probably do it too) . These glorious graphics are brought to life by the games epic soundtrack that does a lot to bring the world to life.
Infamous is an evolution of Sucker Punches gaming formula and it tells an epic and original superhero story that i eagerly await the next chapter of.
