    Examples

    • Use of internet shorthand/lingo like "lol" and "n00b" in dialogue. Killer7's Susie Sumner, the spirit of a psychopathic teenage girl, uses emoticons in her dialogue boxes to communicate her expression in her statements.
    • Use of memes and in-jokes. In Scribblenauts, players have the ability to type in a list of memes like "longcat" and "LOLWUT". Some other games reference jokes made by their fanbases in later releases and updates as an act of fan service.
    • References to popular shows/videos. Ever since Halo 2, Bungie has made references and included cameos to/by the popular machinima group Rooster Teeth, after the popularity of their machinima series Red vs. Blue, "filmed" using Halo: Combat Evolved.
