James Hawkins graduated from James Madison University, located in Harrisonburg, VA, in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science and Arts degree. He also received a certification in 3DStudio MAX3 from the School of Communication Arts, located in Raleigh, NC in 2001.

His resume begins with his work for Timeline Computer Entertainment, from April 2000 to June 2001, where he was the concept artist, texture artist and modeler for several different projects. He then worked for Sinister Games from July 2001 to October 2001 as a contracted concept artist. He was also a contracted concept artist for Shimmer Studios from May 2001 to December 2002 and for Brom's Dark Age Games from June 2002 to November 2002. He worked at Ritual Entertainment from November 2001 to November 2002 and made character concepts for Counterstrike Xbox and created weapon and environmental concepts on Star Trek Elite Force II. He also worked at Legend Entertainment from November 2002 to October 2003, as a concept artist for Unreal II XMP. Starting in October 2003, he began working for EPIC Games, working as a fulltime concept artist for Unreal Championship II, lead concept artist for Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War. Presently, he still works at EPIC Games and was the senior concept artist on Gears of War 2.
