Participation in the First Nonary Game

As a young girl, Akane Kurashiki and her brother Aoi were kidnapped by Cradle Pharmaceuticals and forced to participate in the first Nonary Game. They and seven other children were left on a boat with an assortment of puzzles that needed to be solved to escape death, and nine other children were left in a similar predicament on an exact replica of that boat elsewhere in the world. This was done to study the morphogenetic field, something that Cradle believed connected all things and could be used as a means of communications. They believed that by putting the children in this situation, it would trigger their latent psychic abilities and allow the two groups to communicate with each other and solve the puzzles together.

However, instead of contacting the children on the other ship, when Akane's powers activated she saw another copy of the same game being played nine years in the future by her now grown school friend Junpei. Using their connection they were both able to solve all the puzzles and escape.

Participation in the Second Nonary Game

Akane saw much when she looked into the future, including that she and her brother were the architects of the Nonary Game Junpei participated in, in order to ensure that they would survive the one they participated in. Using money they obtained through the stock market using their visions of the future, Akane and Aoi start the organization Crash Keys and spend the following years setting up another perfect replica of the ship. Acting as a mysterious mastermind, Zero, they then kidnapped Junpei as well as six other people related in some way to the first Nonary game, placing them as well as themselves in the ship as members of the game.

During the game, Akane and Aoi act as if they have no idea what's going on. The participants decide to use code names as their captor may not know anything about them, and Akane's is June. As expected, the group is able to work through all the puzzles and escape, ensuring the younger Akane will do the same. Akane and Aoi then go on the run, as this version of the game included the deaths of two employees of Cradle, revenge for what was done to them years ago.

    Participation in the Decision Game

A year later as part of her activities with Crash Keys, Akane was tasked with entering another game. This was to stop the release and spread of the deadly virus Radical-6 from the site of the game by the terrorist cult Free the Soul. She first ensures that Sigma and Phi's consciousnesses switch place with that of their future selves, as their participation in this game is vital to it's success. Akane then enters into the Mars Mission test program along with the future Sigma and Phi. Soon after they arrive at the test site in the Nevada Desert, they along with the six other participants are kidnapped by a new Zero and brought to a bunker to begin the Decision Game.

Throughout the Decision Game many different timeline are created. In most Akane is killed, however there are two in which she escapes. In one, the group masters the ability to "jump" and escape to a timeline where Zero released them before the game had even begun. In this timeline Zero reveals that he had done everything, including creating Free the Soul and risking the release of Radical-6, to prepare the group for an even greater coming threat. The extent of this threat has yet to be revealed. In another, Akane and some of the other participants are able to escape by brute force. However, in this timeline Radical-6 was released in the bunker. When they escaped the virus came with them and created a pandemic that swept the world, killing two billion people by 2074.

    Helping Zero Sr.

Soon after Radical-6 is released, the future Sigma and Phi return to the future and their present day selves return. Having seen the future, they know their destinies and begin to set them in motion. Phi is infected with Radical-6 and must therefore be put into cryostatis, and Akane and Sigma take her body as well as two others in cryostasis to a moon base. They then begin preparations for the future using Crash Keys' resources.

When they were sent to the future, Sigma and Phi took place in a third Nonary Game on the moon base designed to awaken their power to "jump" through time and dimensions. Akane and Sigma spent the next 45 years setting up this game as well as researching robotics and cloning to create Luna and Kyle, two of the participants in the upcoming game. Sigma took the name Zero Sr. for the purposes of their activities. When the time came, Sigma jumped back and switched places with his past self.

All the participants began the game in small rooms in groups of one or two. Akane placed herself in a room alone knowing Dio, an agent of Free the Soul, may come to kill her and take her place in the game. In timelines where she lived she put Kyle Klim in stasis, put on his armor, and assumed his identity. In timelines where she died Kyle wore the suit himself. This created a Schrodinger's Cat paradox. Once Sigma and Phi had become adept enough at jumping that they realized the trick in a timeline where she was alive, she explained everything to them. The two returned to their own time to prepare for their eventual chance to successfully complete the Decision Game. This version of Akane, however, had to remain in the failed timeline.
