    Concept »

Kinect is a camera and depth sensor-based peripheral for the Xbox 360 that allows users to interact with and play games using their whole bodies, rather than using a standard controller.

Kinect to have 2 versions (most expensive $189)

    VG247:

If you recall, there was a story a while back that the camera in Natal had be dumbed down a bit in order to make it cheaper. Well, we’ve been told by our source that Microsoft replaced that bit with tilt, that is controlled by a motor on the base – which has be known for a bit now.

Yo, this is getting crazy.  Most expensive Kinect hardware = $189?  I really want to see what exactly could be changed to make two iterations that much different.

Not sure; they don't really specify that.  Maybe that would be the case, but wouldn't that reduce the actual effectiveness of the cheaper version?  Sounds dumb.

Nah, man.  Speculation is one of the coolest parts about E3!  Especially when the speculation doesn't hold true and we go back and see what we were talking about as wrong.

@MrKlorox: I practically don't understand anything in that article except for "There are 2 versions, most expensive = $189".  In my mind, I'm thinking by "tilt" they mean that Natal's camera will actually move around, tracking the movements of the user; while without "tilt" would mean that the camera stays stable, so the user has to remain in the camera's view point and can't move around as freely.

I agree, we don't know the price tag of the cheaper one, how it looks, what it does, how the games look and some other stuff. All this late leak stuff is maybe hurting hte image of kinect before it even comes out.

It's been rumored that the processor will be used in the 360 and not the peripheral itself, so maybe they mean that the place that was reserved for Kinect's processor was replaced with a motor from that change.

A plausible theory I saw on gaf was that one version will have have the chip contained within and be more expensive, while the new 360 has that already bulit in and so it only needs a stripped down, cheaper version.

    Still, $189? Damn.

@Steve_C:  I also considered that, but it's not very plausible since games will have to be made with the concession in processing power in mind. Would they get those extra CPU cycles back if using a chipped Kinetic? Will the chipped Kinetic have the faster response time?

But then wouldn't that mean that some games would only be compatible with the most expensive version?  They wouldn't split the market like that...  Unless it meant that, if you were using the cheaper version of Kinect, the games would look worse or perform worse?

I could see a 360 arcade bundle w/ Kinetic coming to a total of $189.
The timing feels right for another price drop. An arcade unit for around $149, new design for $249 each being $40-$50 more expensive with a Kinetic included.

But even that could mess up game compatibility between both versions.  I'll say that this rumor is pretty iffy but, if it's true, there's no way Microsoft would segment their audience for the sake of making two different Kinects.

@MrKlorox: As I said, the new 360 slim could have the chip already in it, so then there wouldn't be any need to buy a version of Kinect that also has the chip in. So you'd have two options:

    • Old 360 with more powerful Natal.
    • New more powerful 360 slim with chipless Natal.

I'm not sure if it creates lag if some of the processing is done externally as opposed to all together in the console, but to my ignorant mind both configurations should produce similar results. I suppose an issue with that though is how to advise consumers which version they need so they won't waste money.

@FluxWaveZ: I agree but think of it like the microphone in the DS-almost no one uses it and if MS is finding that the microphone is only being used for interface stuff and Skype I could see it getting dumped.  But I don't even then see a microphone being that expensive to make any type of huge price difference.

I just sort of assumed that they would bundle the natal with the slim, in which case it wouldn't have a price.

As usual, Microsoft dividing their user base with overpriced peripherals.  I wouldn't be surprised if they lowered the price on the 360 itself for those curious about the technology.

@Hailinel: Microsoft is not as unified as you seem to think, not by a long shot.

Ever heard the phrase ' knifing the baby' ? Microsoft is famous for having competing products with itself due to his high amount of segmentation. It's frankly a miracle that recently the Zune and Phone teams have been doing the interesting things they have been, and that Zune can even make an appearance in 360.

Zune and the 360 are both part of Entertainment & Devices.  It's not that much of a stretch to apply the Zune branding to a new 360 feature.

No blind people here, broski.  Of course the gaming division is connected to Microsoft, but that doesn't mean that the same people that developed Windows ME and Vista are the same people that developed and are purportedly putting out two versions of Kinect, which is originally what I took offense to.  Sorry if you didn't intend to take heat for your throwaway comment.
