The Large Hadron Collider lies in a tunnel that reaches 17 (27 kilometers) miles in circumference. It's located 570 feet (175 meters) below the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. On September 10, 2008, the protons beams successfully made it all the way around the main ring for the first time. However, 9 days later, a serious fault between two superconducting bending magnets forced the operations to halt. They are expected to continue in November of 2009.
