The light machine gun is a versatile weapon meant to be fired from a bipod or mount, although it is possible to shoulder or bump fire the weapon. Usually a light machine gun uses belts of ammunition, although that is not always the case. The defining feature of a light machine gun compared to submachine guns, medium machine guns, and heavy machine guns is cartridge size; a light machine gun fires intermediate cartridges, a submachine gun fires pistol cartridges, a medium machine gun fires full-size cartridges, and a heavy machine gun fires high caliber cartridges.
