In Battlefield 2142 the Support classes' machine guns had "ultramodern onboard stabilization [...] systems." In addition to reducing the bullet spread, the weapons also overheated when using long bursts of fire. The technique that seemed to work best at balancing spread and heat was to lay down fire until your crosshairs almost stopped shrinking, then feathering short bursts at regular intervals to keep it tightly clustered and vent heat. This made the machine guns nearly useless in any situation other than defending due to how long they took to become accurate.
This is basically the opposite of the Expanding Crosshair concept.
