Limbo: Post PLaying Thoughts
Having been excited for this release for sometime now, today was the day it was released. I woke up excited to purchase and play and after having played it to the end in one sitting, here are my post play thoughts.
"STORY"
In the beginning the kid awakens in a strange and mysteriously dark world; what a mood setter from the go. Just dropped in, no preface, no reasons, just get up and go. As you progress, the "story" unfolds little, if any, until the last moment before the credits where everything is realized. During play, I constantly was asking myself "What is this kid going after?", and the game pieced it all masterfully together in 2 minutes at the very end. So was the trek worth it in the end? YES.
GAMEPLAY
This game is out to rip you to shreds, dismember you, impale you, fry you, etc etc etc. If you go through this game without dying you've either played this game a lot already, or you are reading/watching a walkthrough. You are meant to die; die over and over and over. All the the methods are very clever and sometimes you want to see what will happen when you mess up. I know I did several times. But then again, they happened WAAAAAAAAAY more by me messing up. Although it is great fun and challenging, I did find this game to be a little short. 2-3 hours is all you'll get out of it, unless you get stuck on some parts for a while.
VISUALS
Breath-taking. For using just shades of black, white, and gray this game is beautiful. This adds a lot to the whole ambiance of the game. My favorite moments are when you are searching out the light to make a mind-controlling worm change directions or when its pitch dark and all you can see are the kid's eyes.
SOUNDS
Ambient sounds are worthwhile, and finalize the ambiance of the game. No music, no nothing. Just your footsteps and background noises to put you in your place and show you JUST how alone you are in the world.
OVERALL
It goes to show how amazing this game is that it captured my attention to make me play it in one sitting from beginning to end. Limbo is a masterpiece, for all of its minuscule faults. Its you against the world due to the presentation and ambiance of the game. It’s beautiful, it’s mind blowing, it’s jaw-dropping and it’s one of the most meaningful experiences you can ever hope to have. Play this game if you have an Xbox as soon as possible. Well worth the money even though its not the longest arcade game out there.
