I really hate giantbomb's forum structure. I completely missed out on this post and only just heard of it on another site.

Anyway this is absolutely awesome news, really looking forward to this. Estpolis is the original Japanese series of the Lufia games for those wondering.

I just stumbled upon the artwork that was released along the logo. Its proportion really reminds me of the DS and when thinking of it it would make sense for the game ends up there. Guess we'll see the 19th.

Wow, they're actually releasing a new one? And they still have the SNES dev team intact?

I loved Lufia II back in the day (I found Lufia & the Fortress of Doom to be extremely boring, however).

It's coming to Nintendo DS.  On top of fully 3D visuals and a full voice acting cast, the genre has changed from encounter-based RPG to action RPG. The story and gameplay systems are also seeing considerable change apparently.

Lonving that they are using humanly proportioned characters for once in a DS RPG, looking forward to it.

    Full details from the interview:
    - Square Enix asked them if they would like to do a new Estpolis game The second game’s system was a lot more refined, the scenario and music were well liked, and it took place before the first game too, so we decided to use the second game as the motif (Hajime Kojima)
    - We didn’t want to do a straight port ( Naoyuki Ukeda
    - Square Enix told us that we’re free to do whatever we want, so that’s what we’ll do! (Ukeda)
    - Turn based command battle systems aren’t new anymore, so we’re making it an action rpg now (Kojima)
    - It’s not just a remake, we’re rebuilding the story, the characters, and the world settings ( Masahide Miyata
    - The hadou weapons will be a key component of the story, the world is different from the SFC version (Miyata)
    - The bottom screen will only be used to switch characters (Kojima)
    - The game will revolve around the D-pad more than the touch pen (Kojima)
    - Boss battles will use two screens, it has its own special code for that part (Ukeda)
    - Boss battles will be hard if you don’t know what to do against each one of them (Miyata)
    - “It will satisfy action game players, but players that are bad with action games will be okay too” by Kojima
    - Scenario is based on the second game, there are parts where we are deliberately letting them say the exact same words as in the original game, but basically, everything is rewritten (Miyata)
    - The number of towns that are appearing in the game is different from the original two games (Miyata)
    - There will be parts in the game which will make fans of the series smile (Miyata)
    - Miyata has surprisingly not changed at all. He’s just embarrassed reading his scenario from 15 years ago (Ukeda)
    - The music is being brought over from the original two games (Ukeda)
    - We changed the sound quality without messing with the melody line (Ukeda)
    - The main staff from the SFC versions are making this game. It’s rare to have something like that 15 years after the last game (Ukeda)
    - Stuff such as “Mahou no XXXX Magical XXXXXX” from the original are still in the game (Kojima)
    - We changed a lot in the game, but we constantly kept in our minds that “we should keep the parts that made the series what it is” (Kojima)

    http://zepy.momotato.com/2009/11/18/new-lufia-game-details/

I'm pretty optimistic about this one, I'm glad Kojima went to the original creators for it.

I was heart broken at first to know that it wasn't simply a visual update to the franchise, but now that I think about it I think I look forward to its transformation into something new. I haven't played the Lufia games in a while. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

This is excellent news.  I've never played a Lufia game, but I'd certainly like to and this sounds like it might be my best chance to get into the series if they release it in the west.

He's probably disappointed at its shift from turn-based.

Shit, I finally finished my homework and got around to watching the trailer. I got nostalgia chills seeing Maxim's name and hearing a pseudo similar Lufia theme. It looks like a
Seiken Densetsu  and Wild Arms hybrid which is actually not a bad idea.

I just uploaded a new batch of 66 screenshots to the site which adds up to a total of 213 screenshots, so if you're still craving for Estpolis media, just go browse through the site's gallery -- it'll take you a while.

Also, this news is a few weeks old by now, but just in case you didn't know yet -- if you order the Japanese version you'll get a bonus disc containing 5 arranged tracks and 3 drama tracks. I imagine they will only give these out for a limited time, so if you want the disc, you might wanna pre-order.

Also, while I absolutely love the music in the original Lufia II (it's actually my favorite SNES soundtrack), it seems a bit out-of-place in this game... They haven't done anything to update the music and instead just converted it to DS format and called it a day. While I appreciate this because it prevents them from screwing up the music like they did in Pokemon HG/SS, it just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the game as it looks so modern.

Oh well, had they actually arranged the tracks to the point where they're barely recognizable, I probably would've been complaining about that, so I should just be happy that all the tracks sound pretty much identical to how I remember them.

Square Enix recently put up a site for the OST with some samples: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/est/

To see the tracklist, click the black circle that's following your mouse cursor (took me about 10 secs to figure that out...) You can currently only listen to 10 BGM tracks, but it looks like they'll have samples of the entire OST over time (or maybe they just haven't revealed the full track listing yet).

The sole track in the bonus disc section is actually a drama track and can be listened to on the official site (just click the "Web Drama" button). If you've watched a lot of harem anime in your life, you can probably figure out what it's about (ugh, I already think Tia's annoying and the game isn't even out yet).

Just found this. On the one hand it's good to know that people are willing to put money into a Lufia game still. On the other hand this looks like it'll be lame. Losing the turn based combat completely turns me off to it. It seems like the only thing that fits with Lufia 2 is the music and slightly the environmental puzzles, but as mentioned the music is just copied straight so that's gonna fit. I'll give it a try and hope I'm wrong, but the video is only serving to make me more apprehensive.
