If only I had my own Luck Dragon...er...I mean Majin...My own Maj
Don't get caught off guard by the character design of the Majin, but yes he does sound like Falkor.
Majin and Tepeu are best friends, not by choice, but by coincidence. Tepeu, a master thief, sneaks through this tower after his friends of the furred variety tell him to. He stumbles onto this giant of a creature, locked on a boulder from these evil beings in their kingdom. Tepeu feeds this monster some fruit, the creature regains some strength where both the creature and Tepeu free the creature.
The evil beings chase and attack the couple and as such, it is slowly explained that the creature is named Majin. Majin and Tepeu escape the tower just barely and then start their own adventure to restore their kingdom by recovering Majin's strengths.
This is an action-adventure dungeon crawler, with blatant Metroidvania rip-offs. They have okay voice overs for all the characters, including the animals, like the parrot above. The controls are very janky, and finicky way too many times they are precise. Its really sad to find a game that you can get into with very well done puzzles and average combat, to preform like a drunken man trying to get up three flights of stairs.
As I previously stated, you get to back track a lot in this game. So much so, I got lost in the first twenty minutes of the game because there were multiple paths with little to no indication as to where you need to be. Huge, okay looking blocky areas, with non-stop texture popping. Great. Even more to take off for me liking this game. :/
See? That looks fucking fantastic for a fantasy setting. Not more fucking ruins, blocky textured grass, and fading in and out characters. *sigh*
As you fight with Majin, you collect friendship and experience shards. Friendship, red, and experience, blue, shards level up as you collect a set amount of them, alloying Tepeu and Majin, and also Tepeu, with more stamina, harder hits in combos, and faster execution attacks for the pair. For some reason, there is an outfit collection for Tepeu. The different articles of clothing can be either combined to give the best second features, or up to two other abilities separately.
The best part of this game, and thats not saying much, is the UI. The user interface is crisp, clear, and if you want it to be, ever-present. The menus are brilliantly done with no harsh edges, and the color palette is exquisite.
Its a budget title. There will always be some sort of negative connotation with that, but they have good reasons for that. This is a perfect example. Great idea on paper, but when actually tried, shit just falls apart. It made me disappointed. I kind of liked the beginning, then I played the rest of it... 2 okay buddy attacks out of 5.
