Traditional depiction of Mammon.

Mammon is a personification of greed and avarice. While there is little basis for Mammon (which was a word simply associated with wealth) literally being a demon in ancient literature, the word was commonly personified from the early middle ages onwards to become the figure invariably associated with the word today. He is often depicted as a wolf or a banker; he was described as being Hell's ambassador to England in Collin De Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal in a none-too-subtle attack on the English. As one could assume, the "Mammon Machine" of Chrono Trigger is a reference to Mammon's greed.
