Need to see his actual character before I judge. It's the voice actor and the writing that will make him interesting or not.

Casey shows the updated James Vega
A screenshot of a character model is a pretty awesome way to showcase the personality of a character. Wait ...

Ah man, I just realized something... He looks like John Cena. :(
Oh god, his face totally does. I knew I recognized it somehow.
It's like if John Cena and a gorilla had a kid.

Out of all of the years I've spent playing Bioware games, I have to say, this is the first time I have a problem with what they've done.
Want to make a random generic solider dudebro like Kaidan or Jacob? Cool, sure, why not. But, please, PLEASE, don't make him look like John Cena screwed a space-ape and had some half-Cena half-ape kid.
Ugh. I literally cannot unsee John Cena gorilla baby. It's burned into my retinas.
Exactly. They could write a deep backstory and have a real personality for the guy, but I still think he will be the next Jacob- in that nobody wants him on their squad- except for Jeff :PHe looks like a Jersey Shore dude.
Also, in a surprise twist a la MGS2, you will play as this generic guy for half the game. Bro´in out and drinkin´ proteine shakes. Yeah brah!
The updated version is an improvement, he's not a particularly good looking character, but Bioware's character design is always hit and miss. As long as he's an interesting character in game I don't really care what he looks like, to be honest. It's not like they're trying to make him the new face of the franchise or anything.
Alternate version suitable for the internet: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!? This looks like someone got themselves a 3D scanner and VOMITED IN IT. It's like there is puke all over and around my screen. Bioware are the worst fucking studio on the goddamn planet. I don't want fucking dudebros in my game. Fuck EA fucking fuck fuck.
They could have taken a better snapshot of the model on the 1st pic. Right now, it looks like they severely fucked up with the proportions.
Come on, Bioware!

From Joystiq: "According to the May 2011 issue of Game Informer, Vega is meant to embody the mindset of a new player entering the franchise" ...indeed.
It now makes total sense... that being said I still throw up a bit every time I see Vega over how stupid he looks.

AKA the dudebro audience.
Nice. "Hey everyone, look at this dude! His hair rocks oh yeah America!" and then they see that this game is deep and stuff.
Oh Bioware, I see what you doin and is pretty funny. Keep it up. )D
All the humans in Mass Effect look pretty terrible really, except Miranda being modeled after an attractive actress and all. Also, grow a damn mustache dude. (I love Mass Effect)It's the same he's just not wearing armor, WTF.
I would so prefer this guy being in ME over the current one. I can imagine it now...I thought I recognized that guy...
"I don't like the way you look at me Shepard I don't appreciate you looking at me like that you think I'm bullshitting you Shep- FUCK YOU MAN, FUCK YOU!"
Well......it's still better than the current character.

Who should voice him? I vote Topher Grace.
There is something very wrong with his nose...
Oh well I guess I can always get it on with Ashley instead
Am I the only one who sees this as a non-issue? There were characters in the previous ME games that I wasn't interested in and weren't used in my party. The design may not be what you want, but he could be a compelling character with an interesting and well written story. If not, leave him on the Normandy and never talk to him.
At this point in the series I don't see the need for any new crew members. I've read four news posts that say 'Vega is supposed to represent the new player, an adept solider and shooter but with little knowledge of Galactic politics'. Just fucking stop it Bioware, if new players jump into the game they will and then they'll go back to do their homework. You fucked up ME2 enough by focusing on the new players and the ps3ers, just do the shit right. Thank you.

Very true. Though there's also the problem of only one character (Liara) being 100% certain of ending up in ME3. Well 1.5 if you count whoever survives Virmire, but they are still two different people. The others risk dying in the Suicide Mission, and Wrex would easily bite the dust on Virmire if you didn't have enough renegade/paragon points. There has to be one or two new characters in ME3 that can help guide the experience until you're back out in space to fight reapers. It's likely that Vega and Ash/Kaidan will be your two party members for the first part of the journey, since you're suppose to actually face encounters before you hit the Local Cluster relay.
More I see about this game, more I'm afraid its doing a DA2 on the fans, from amazing alien races and mysteries to generic marine dude. I mean, freaking cast a sod like Nathan Fillion as a gunslinging cargo smuggler or shit, I mean, he's got the resume and a human making his own way through the new frontier is a bit more interesting then random buff marine dude #5. Ugh. Hell, If they want to cast a marine, cast Adam Baldwin.
I don't know, "lovable rogue in space" is probably the most played sci-fi character in existence. The last one even remotely interesting since Han Solo was Atton Rand, and he was a complete deconstruction.
I'd like a marine character who is a by-the-book, completely lacking a weirdness censor boyscout.
