Max Design was founded in 1991 by brothers Albert and Martin Lasser, as well as Wilfried Reiter. The company found success by developing successful economical simulation games, such as The Patrician, 1869, or the Anno series. After 12 years, Max Design decided to close down in 2004, stating that the need for a reorientation prompted the "permanent break" of the studio. The founders of Max Design however did not stay away from the game business for long and founded Red Monkeys in 2006.
