That ex cop guy shows up multiple times throughout the game in obscure places, what are the chances of that? Do you think rockstar is doing that same thing they did in RDR and that cop isn't actually real, and he's a figment of maxs

The long-awaited third Max Payne game finally arrived in May 2012, courtesy of Rockstar Vancouver. Eight years after the end of Max Payne 2, an aging, burnt-out Max finds one last chance to redeem himself while working as a bodyguard for a rich family in Brazil.
That ex cop is everywhere! .. Wait(spoilers)
Some shop in the favela right before you enter the bar and hidden in another bathroom stall in the airport@hbkdx12: Where is he beside the club bathroom? I thought that was a one-off encounter.

More or less@CL60: Does he just keep talking about how awesome his family is?

It's been a long time since I played RDR. Who didn't actually exist? Are you talking about the guy that was implied to be Death/Satan?

@Jason_Bourne: I'm not sure what the time line is on these games but his daughter died when she was 6 months old so if she were to be in college that would suggest these 3 games take place over a course of at least 18 years. Don't think it's been that long. but i could be wrong
she died in '98 i think? if the game takes place in 2012 then she wouldn't be in college
Oh cool, I found him in the club and the in the favela but had no idea he was in the airport.
You can also find the creepy dude that was in the brothel being held in a jail cell at the police station later on.
I don't think he's just a figment of his imagination, but he's definitely symbolizing the life Max could have.
On a side note, I absolutely love the fact that Max stops him from showing a photo of his kids, probably thinking along the lines of "don't do that, because if you die, this is going to be awkward".

A retired cop with a family who doesn't feel the need to be a hero? Also, his daughter is in college, wouldn't Max's daughter be that age if she had survived?
Also, he and his wife operate a charitable organization in the slums.
An interesting foil for Max's character, to be sure.
No. Giovanna operates the charitable organization. The wife of the ex-cop just said to him that he should do something with his life and he was helping with the organization.@Jason_Bourne said:

While it doesn't matter if he is real or not in terms of the symbolism it provides (besides being that, if not real, it illustrates how deep Max's desire for a different life may be), I did find something interesting about The Ex-Cop and his 'realness'. The final time in the game you meet him is in an airport's bathroom stall. You have a conversation about the ex-cop's daughter and how she is waiting in a plane (oddly, he seems unconcerned for her safety). After the conversation The Ex-Cop shuts the stall door and you can continue on your way. However, I accidentally turned around and ran into the stall door; It opens. Inside? No one. It's empty. Is this an oversight on Rockstar's part or a clever indication that The Ex-Cop is simply a figment of Max's deep subconscious desires?
