Poll How should I get the MGS 1 experience? (71 votes)

Play the game from PSN 93%
    Watch a walkthrough 7%

    Hey guys,

So I have had MGS 4 on my shelf for quite some time now and have never really played that much of it and just bought MGS 2 and 3 for $10 from the Xbox sale last week. I have heard that I should play through all the games to get the best experience, especially the first one since I hear it adds a lot to the rest of the games. So would it be best to play the first game by buying it off PSN or to just watch a walkthrough of it. I don't know if the first one holds up that well and I just don't want to get super frustrated and not see through the rest of the series because of it.

    Thanks!

    Just play it.

I think the Gamecube version wouldn't be a bad place to start.

Just play it man. Its worth going through. You might not think its AS great as someone who played the game back in 1998 but then again for a game from 1998 it really holds up. I'm going through a Metal Gear Marathon right now and beat it just the other day and it was still a ton of fun.

The GameCube version is great but it's extremely hard to find and some vastly prefer the original PS1 version so you can't go wrong playing that one.

The Gamecube version is fantastic but they did some weird things in the cutscenes. Going from MGS2, MGS3 and MGS4 back to the original will probably seem pretty jarring but I played the game for the first time since 1998 last year and I think it holds up exceptionally well. Either way MGS is a masterpiece and my opinion is that you should play it.

MGS1 is a great game. Jeff gave it a 8.5 despite playing it in Japanese. Hence missing out on all of the story. That says a lot about the quality of the gameplay... and even more about gamespot's old editorial practices.

No. They messed up Grey Fox's voice so badly in the Gamecube version.

Twin Snakes is no good. If you want the mgs experience, you want to play kojima games.

Play the original through PSN or with the disc for PSX. This is definitely a game that no one should miss who enjoys good characters, plot pacing, and an enthralling story. It is pretty far-fetched at times, but hey, it's a fucking video game.

Do not just read a synopsis on a Wiki or through YouTube, this does not give the experience the justice is deserves.

I don't know how it works with PSN version but you should be prepared for the codec calling Meryl part.

I am glad that I am playing it! I made it up to the first time I contact Meryl through the codec and the story is really good so far. The stealth was quite an adjustment at first (definitely compared to the most recent stealth games I have played) but MGS is so far very fun!

I guess I'm too late to vote! I hope you'll enjoy the game, and if you want to watch a playthrough afterwards I recommend Chip Cheezum's. It's pretty thorough and entertaining.

I don't know how it works with PSN version but you should be prepared for the codec calling Meryl part.

If you haven't gotten to that Meryl codec part, don't read this: I think it's in the digital manual included with the game.

If you press the guide button it gives you the intructions and the back of the box information.

I'd say if you can play Twin Snakes. MGS purists will tell you it's not the best version because of how insane all the cutscenes are and how some of the music and voice overs have been changed for the worse. But if you're not already a hardcore fan the PS1 graphics can be hard to cope with.

If you cant find Twin Snakes (it's pretty expensive on ebay) play the PC version, it looks a lot crisper than the PS1 version and it comes with all the VR missions. You'll need to have a game pad of some sort though.

Definitely play it! MGS 1 is my all time favorite, to this day I remember the hours I spent on it and the plot, you'll not be disappointed I can assure you! However, keep in mind that the graphics are really old, don't expect anything in that regards, just use your imagination :p

Didn't the original voice actor die or something? But yeah, it's a shame, his voice was great.

EDIT: Just checked IMDB and he's still alive.

If you've never played it on PS1 go with the GameCube version. You won't notice the differences that people complain about and even by today's standards the game looks sharp.
