Killzone 3 Officially Announced

Jetpacks are the new Nolan North.

Unsurprisingly, the big boy Killzone series won't stop at two. This morning Sony Computer Entertainment's European wing confirmed the existence of Killzone 3, a Guerrilla Games-developed sequel to the original PS3-exclusive FPS. According to the official European release materials, the game will ship with Stereoscopic 3D and will feature "more vehicles, explosive high-powered weapons, and a vicious close-combat system."

It's also set to be a direct sequel, kicking off right where the previous title left me waiting for resolution (and a cure for end boss frustration). As told by the press release, after the big baddies' death, a nuclear bomb is detonated in the Helghan capital. This puts a stop to the ISA push, and more importantly, your chances of backup. It'll be just you (Sev) and company versus the evil, militant Helghast--sans a Pip-Boy and cute Vault apparel in Killzone 3.

This probably isn't the first time you've heard about this game. Killzone 3 has been rumored as a 2010 release since the dinosaurs started huffing cosmic smog. More recently, though, it was revealed that GamePro was set to feature the title in an upcoming issue of its gaming mag. As was leaked, yes, jetpacks will indeed have a place in the game. And do look forward to thrusting around in bigger levels. The Euro press release boasts that the environments in Killzone 3--which will apparently be a digital smorgasbord of exotic locations ranging from snow, to jungle, to nuclear wasteland--will be ten times larger than the ones in Killzone 2.

The US PlayStation blog threw out a couple of screenshots for the newly announced game this afternoon. As you can see, it's quite pretty.
