We're 3DS Ambassadors now, people. Time to...wait until September 1 for the games to roll out.

September 1 is when Nintendo will unleash the first wave of free games, beginning with Virtual Console NES releases. When the program was announced, Nintendo said the NES versions for 3DS Ambassadors would be slightly featured limited, with tweaks coming to the versions that would eventually show up on the eShop for purchase.

3DS Ambassadors get both for free.

Nintendo of Europe has detailed the differences between each version, as well as what we're getting with the Game Boy Advance releases.

On the NES side, there will an in-game manual that explains the controls, with a full manual coming later. There will be "pass the DS" multiplayer initially, with wireless versus play in the updated version. The typical "Restore Point" save functionality, allowing you to save/load at any time, will not be in the initial release, but it will come later. Instead, you'll be limited to suspending play via "VC Suspend."

As for the GBA games, there will be full manuals. Neither "Restore Point" nor "VC Suspend" are included, so you'll have to rely on each title's in-game system mechanisms. If you want to stop playing, make sure to exit the game, as there is no Sleep Mode with GBA releases, so your battery will go poof.

In a future update, you'll be able to transfer all of these games to another system.

Interesting.

Sounds pretty dumb. Oh well, I'll just play every one of these games that I already own on their respective consoles or on my EVO 3D.

Hell, I'll play some N64 and PS1 games on that very same phone.

. . .

Why did I buy a 3DS again?

#4 Posted by Sammo21 (3276 posts) -

I'm ready for a list of the full 20 games Nintendo. They better not give us crap games...

#5 Posted by Thor_Molecules (732 posts) -

Sounds to me like they are flailing their arms to get these games out as soon as humanly possible.

Nearly everything is "coming later", "eventually available" or "will be added in the future".

@patrickklepek: Small typo in the 3rd last line, I think it ought to be "exit" not "exist".

#7 Posted by Alex_Carrillo (281 posts) -

@Goldanas: Because touch screen controls for games that originally used buttons, especially action games, is stupid.

#8 Posted by Alex_Carrillo (281 posts) -

Why do gamers seem like the most entitled bunch of cunts in the world?

Agreed. How dare they even think about giving us something besides exactly what we want when it is entirely free for us?

On a more serious note, it is odd that you can't use sleep mode while in a GBA game. I'm not really sure why they wouldn't take the time to get that working since that's always been such a nice feature of the entire DS lineup.

#10 Posted by Vrikk (901 posts) -

And yet we still don't know all the games yet. I want to know what we will be getting!

#11 Edited by Goldanas (546 posts) -

@Alex_Carrillo: While I would have immediately agreed with you before, I've actually started getting better at using touch screen controls for the emulated fighting games. I'm certainly not as good as I am with a controller or stick, but it was definitely easy enough to very quickly become better at it.

There are certainly better solutions, but it seems like someone could get used to this type of play.

#12 Posted by Ketchupp (672 posts) -

Yes, I will make certain that I exist the game.

#13 Posted by dubios451 (134 posts) -

@Ketchupp: Maybe its Nintendo's version of COD prestige!

Delivery scheduled to begin within the year

The notion that it just begins within the year does not fill me with confidence.

#15 Posted by m0rdr3d (474 posts) -

Wow.  So you're getting old games with no save mode or sleep mode initially?  At least they're "free".  But watching Nintendo scramble and flail around like this is a little painful.
#16 Posted by Tefferz (13 posts) -

"would be slightly featured limited"?

#17 Posted by Battletoad (130 posts) -

Pretty silly that they can't get save states running on simple roms. Especially since it is going to take them 3 weeks to come out after they announced them.

#18 Posted by CelShader (62 posts) -

SRSLY?

#19 Posted by Hailinel (24790 posts) -
@Goldanas Yes, how dare they give us early adopters free stuff. How dare they!
#20 Edited by TheMasterDS (2066 posts) -

Also Red 3DS is a thing as of September 9th. I will buy a Red 3DS.

#21 Edited by Goldanas (546 posts) -

@Hailinel: My point was they're giving me things that I already paid money for and are inferior to their original versions. Some of the things they're giving us are things I paid for twice already.

All I'm saying is: I would have gladly taken only 1 free upcoming 3DS game--like that new Super Mario game--over the 20 that work better on my phone and have features that they don't on Nintendo's own primary first party device.

#22 Posted by Hailinel (24790 posts) -
@Goldanas Entitlement issues, much? Also, I prefer not to pirate my games. Features lacking at launch will supposedly be added in a later update. What am I missing? Oh, right. The fact that there are twenty free, full games coming. Ingrate.

Because touch controls fucking suck for games like that?

bluetooth gamepads?

#25 Posted by Goldanas (546 posts) -

@Hailinel: I'm not gonna' start a war here, bro. All I'm saying is the number doesn't matter to me when I payed for and played them all already. I'm not going to play them again (I already paid for them again). They may as well be zero games to me.

I payed my $250 at launch, and I paid another $240 plus tax for games. Am I owed anything? No. Just because the device is terrible and the content for it lackluster and overpriced all around, that's my fault for dropping loads of money on trash. I should have waited, rented, etc.

Again, all I'm saying is if they had to give away something for free, just let it be that Mario game that was sorely missed at launch. If that makes me ungrateful and if I have to be looked down upon for that, then so be it.

#26 Posted by AuthenticM (3731 posts) -

Talk about a half-assed job. Why don't they simply wait until they are done with the games before releasing them?

#27 Posted by SixtyXCelph (211 posts) -

I definitely think the 20 free games were lackluster as an incentive to buy the 3DS before  today's price drop.  Hell, it wasn't enough to get me to buy one.  On the other hand, if I had bought the 3DS before they announced the price drop, I would definitely be a little less irritated with my basically wasted $80+tax.  Would I prefer one new 3DS game of my choice to 20 old games, not all of which I care about and the ones I do I've certainly already played?  Of course!  But I wouldn't complain about getting something free, even if it takes a little time to roll out.  A little slap-dash in the execution, maybe, but still better than nothing.

#28 Posted by SixtyXCelph (211 posts) -
@AuthenticM: Because then people will bitch that it's taking so long.  The vocal portion of gamers do not seem to be patient people.  My guess is people will bitch more about waiting for any kind of release than getting something earlier that will then be updated.
#29 Posted by MegaMetaTurtle (414 posts) -

I paid the 'new' low price and I'm getting the free games, so I'm happy with whatever :)

"On the NES side, there will an in-game manual that explains the controls, with a full manual coming later."

Pretty sure you meant to put "be" in "there will be an in-game manual"

This.

#32 Posted by Seroth (719 posts) -

No sleep mode for GBA games sounds really crappy.

#33 Posted by Shadow (4980 posts) -

A red DS just makes more sense. Because of the Nintendo logo I guess (and this damn website), I can't help but associate the color with Nintendo stuff. I gotta say though, the one I got yesterday being my favorite shade of blue (and therefore my favorite color) ain't bad either.

#34 Edited by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Shit, Nintendo. The Wii absolutely ruined you guys.

@Hailinel: Don't break your neck falling off that high horse. Smug asshole.

#35 Posted by Levio (1784 posts) -

Metroid Fusion was pretty good, so that's at least one good game in the pack.

#36 Posted by Brackynews (4083 posts) -

I hope the digital manuals keep the Note pages for posterity, since they would actually be usable on a DS.

#37 Posted by Afroman269 (7387 posts) -

Ya, looks like I'm not missing much. I'll wait for Luigi's Mansion 2 to justify buying this thing. I already played those gba games and the lack of sleep mode during gba games sounds bad.

#38 Posted by biospank (657 posts) -

How do you know if you are a ambassador? Do you get a notification or something, because I loged on at 23:56 and loged out 00:00. and I am really confused if I get the games or not,

#39 Posted by NeoAthanasius (75 posts) -

@Goldanas: I really wish I could get used to touch controls. I have had an iPhone for a really long time, and I'm still terrible at it. I can never get to the point where I feel like I'm actually in control of the game. Maybe I'm just an old man who can't deal with change :-)

Probably because they are.

I'd make a joke about most of the whiners being your typical maladjusted nerds with misplaced anger, but I'm pretty sure that would only make them angrier. I used to really like Giant Bomb's user base, but its the same as everywhere else now. A handful of truly cool people next to a sea of typical internet rage. Funny thing, the most reasonable ones rarely comment on news stories.
#41 Posted by Beforet (2921 posts) -

Now that's hilarious. More so than the price drop itself.

#42 Posted by Klei (1768 posts) -

I don't care for the ambassador programme, even if I bought the game on launch. 20 NES / GBA titles? No thanks, lol.

#43 Posted by laserbolts (5322 posts) -
@Goldanas No idea Zelda maybe?

I have been wondering this for years. It's why I completely left a forum over at IGN that I was a regular at for like seven years.
#45 Posted by MordeaniisChaos (5730 posts) -

It's one thing to bitch about entitlement issues when it's a couple months of online that is fucked up. It's another thing to say people shouldn't be reimbursed for being fucked out of $80 because Nintendo never came through on their promises to provide quality software and support for the platform. Before a single relevant new game came out for the system, the price dropped a large amount. Its bad business, period.

#46 Posted by Mummenschanz (26 posts) -
@biospank: I could be wrong, but I think the way to know for sure is if, after logging into the e-shop, you get a message in your 3DS inbox called "Ambassador Program." I'd check that out first.
#47 Posted by biospank (657 posts) -

@Mummenschanz: Oh okey, thanks.

I got the pm after I got forced by the 3ds, to go on to the eshop to dl the nintendo video thing.

#48 Posted by BlatantNinja23 (930 posts) -

@Goldanas: so you can do all that legally :)

#49 Posted by takua108 (1479 posts) -

No sleeping on GBA games just seems silly. I'm no hardware-level programmer, but what's so hard about dumping memory and then loading it back again?

Oi, red 3DS looks pretty rad.
