History

The first Europeans to actually build a settlement in North Carolina was a Spanish expedition led by Juan Pardo who built a fort called San Juan in 1567. The fort lasted only 18 months and of the 120 men Pardo had stationed in the area only one survived. The next attempt to establish a colony in North Carolina would be by the British. The colony was the first attempt by the british to establish a perment English colony in North America. The expedition was sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh and it was established on Roanoke Island and was given the name Roanoke Colony. 107 men were left on Roanoke to establish a colony when another expedition was sent to bring them more men and supplies all they found was a single skeleton. The disappearance of all the colonists on Roanoke colony lead to it being called The Lost Colony and after that no official attempts to settle North Carolina were made. It slowly was settled by small farmers and for a long time it lacked any towns or cities until the town of New Bern was established. It was originally part of the Province of Carolina along with South Carolina. In 1729 the Province separated and North Carolina became an official colony and one of the original 13 colonies.In 1792 the capital of North Carolina established its state capital Raleigh named after Sir Walter Raleigh.

North Carolina delared session from the Union on May 20, 1861 making it the last of the Confederate states to leave the Union. Around 125,000 North Carolinians served in the Confederate army around 41,000 of them died.

One of the most famous historical events that has occurred in North Carolina is when the Wright brothers were able to achieve controlled, powered and sustained flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17,1903.

Food

A culinary staple in North Carolina is pork barbecue. There are strong regional diffrences in the preparation of pork barbecue. In Western North Carolina they use tomatoe based sauce and oly the pork shoulder. Eastern North Carolina pork barbecue uses a vinger and red pepper based sauce and the entire hog is cooked.

Krispy Kreme a international chain of doughnut stores was started in North Carolina and there head quarters is located in Winston-Salem

Pepsi-Cola was produced in 1898 in New Bern.

Three famous food chains where started in North Carolina. Hardees which was started in Rocky Mount, Bojangles which was started in Charlotte and still has their headquarters there, Golden Corral was started in Fayetteville.
