THE START OF THE GAME
When you make a new file and open up the game, Parrakary will deliver a letter to Mario's house. It's a letter from Princess Peach, requesting for his assistance in finding all the Crystal Stars, with the help of the Magical Map. So, Mario will take a boat trip to Rogueport, the main 'hub' of the game. However, Peach is not there when you arrive, and as you walk to the stairs, you will see a female goomba called Goombella backing away from Lord Crump, an important member in the X-Naut Army, because they want information on the Crystal Stars. Goombella will see Mario, and hide behind him, insulting Lord Crump, provoking him to attack you. Mario starts the game with action commands and a Hammer, and Lord Crump is basically a Tutorial battle. It's basically impossible to lose to him.

Once you defeat Lord Crump, he will call an army of X-Nauts to all crowd on Mario. Mario and Goombella will just walk away from the horde, and you can just walk up the stairs out of the area. Lord Crump will yell at the X-Nauts to get them to stop, but Mario and Goombella will be long gone.
SOFTLOCK:
If you jump into the water without touching the boat dock instead of leaving the area, Mario will respawn to where the boat dropped him off. However, the developers didn't want you to be able to walk through the crowd of X-Nauts, so they made an invisible wall that'll push you back if you try walking through it, and it just so happens that it extends all the way down past the starting point of the game. This makes it impossible to get past, so the only escape is turning off your console and going back from your last save point.
