    Hi everyone, building a PC and I'm not sure if the 3770k is even necessary for what I do. Basically the most PC intensive thing I'll be doing is live streaming a video game (or playing a game and watching youtube on the other monitor. whichever one is more intensive)

    I heard the primary benefit of the 3770k is hyper threading, which almost no games utilize I believe?

    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    The 3770k is more powerful but it won't give you significantly better performance in games. If the most you're going to be doing is streaming games, then the 3570k will be fine.

    @tehjedicake: For what you're doing an i5 is perfect. Unless you're doing virtualization or lots of work with video you don't need an i7. And that 4770 jazz is about the upcoming generation core processors. Improvements are for the most part in power consumption in sleep mode. Don't worry about that for a desktop.

    Edit: Unless you're planning to overclock, then you'd be concerned about power usage, but again your use case suggests it won't be a consideration.

    O_O

    It's the next Intel i7 CPU that will be released within a couple of days (rumored to be June 2nd). It might be best for you if you wait for the release of the Haswell chips. You can either buy the newest Intel CPUs (which will most likely have marginal gaming improvements at best) and their respective Z87 motherboard, or buy the current Ivy Bridge CPU and Z77 motherboard (both of which should get a price drop once Haswell is released).

    If you didn't buy anything yet, go with the 4670k part. Its only about $20 more than the 3570k and 10% faster.

    @tehjedicake: What's your graphics card?

    It's a 460 GTX, BUT I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading that as well. Some card in the 600 series.

    Probably a little overkill for game streaming though :p

    I got a 3570k and 660Ti last year and I have been able to max pretty much every game. Some games (Crysis 3) I've had to lower the AA.

    Go for the i7, dont' listen to anyone saying going for the i5, it is really worth it, and it is about to become even more worth it with the new consoles, and how they will use your cpu. It's better to future proof your CPU then making it lag behind. I'd also recommend you getting the newest generation, avoid lagging behind when it comes to this. Don't save a tiny amount of money when you can future proof your ass.
