Do you plan to build it yourself or do you want to buy a pre-built?

How much money have you set aside for it?

You should plan to put out a grand for most of the pre-built gaming pcs that you can get from manufacturer sites. It's much cheaper to build it yourself so I'd advise you to look into that first.

Haven't used it myself, but cyberpowerpc.com seems to have good prices.

Look at this thread, Geno does an excellent write up, keeps it up to date and is a friendly guy, he should be able to help you.

Edit: Whoops, didn't realise you wanted a prebuilt one, I'd still recommend that thread, it'll give an idea of what to look for.

@stoodspoon: You're gonna have an awful time finding a well priced pre-built gaming PC, I learned that the hard way. But if you MUST buy it pre-built, buy this and then upgrade the graphics chip to something like this, the integrated graphics chip is almost literally worthless unless all you want to play is Half Life 2 (that is literally as technically advanced as you can get with this chip)

Can it use steam? Of course it can, even a Mac can use steam.

And in other news, you won't find a good gaming computer for $500 so it has to be at least $800-$1000.

You won't find a good $500 gaming PC prebuilt.

However, you could just buy a $300-$400 office deskop and add a cheap card to that to make it gaming capable.

    Take this HP for example:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883147302
And then add a cheap low power budget gaming card like the HD 4670 or anything along those lines:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125277

Not great, but should be fine for your needs. Don't think you can do better with a pre-built and still stay below $500.

@stoodspoon: You can build a solid gaming PC for that much but you will need to build it yourself. I promise it's way easier than it may seem. There are plenty of guides that will walk you through all the steps as well.
