Personally i prefer Demigod, i think it has more personality. However i think DOTA, a mod for Warcraft 3 is more stable and has a larger community. Or you can wait and see what the DOTA creator is doing at valve, should be a few years before he announces anything, but it should be amazing.
I would say Heroes of Newerth is a good choice. A lot more polished than Dota, and I like it better because the interface is actually made for that type of game. Other than a few interface differences the gameplay is practically identical to Dota. If you like I can send you a beta invite.
