Ghost Recon 1 + expansion packs + some texture mods
Rainbow Six Vegas 1+2 and Raven Shield
    TES Morrowind + mods
    Red Alert series
    C&C series
    Half-Life
    IGI 2 Covert Strike
Rome:Total War + Europa Barbarorum mod
Medieval:Total War + Stainless Steel mod(though you should first play Total War games as vanilla first)
    GTA series
    Max Payne series
    Civilization series
    Battlefield series

    Those are my suggestions.

Check out Steam, they've been doing their Holiday Sale till the 3rd Of January. I bought Bioshock, Medievel II.: Total War, Ghost Mansion, Beyond Good and Evil, STALKER.: Clear Sky, Torchlight, Mirror's Edge and Jade Empire for under 28 Euros. All great games of the last 5-6 years that are Pretty Much Worth Full Price.

Then get Crysis Warhead instead. That game has more realistic spec requirements. :-)

For RTS, try Empire: Total War (or Medieval II) and Sins of a Solar Empire. For FPS, try Crysis and all the Source stuff and their free mods (stuff like Neotokyo and Curse Episodes rule), maybe STALKER but maybe not since the sequel's coming soon. For RPG try The Witcher and King's Bounty (and its quasi expansion/sequel). For other stuff try Aquaria, Space Rangers 2 and Mount & Blade.

For older games browse Good old Games (don't miss stuff like Fallout 2 and Freespace 2). Not all of them are good (or that old), obviously.

Other great digital distribution platforms: Impulse & Steam. Check both of their top charts for more recommendations I guess.

Great PC centric websites: Rock Paper Shotgun (PC only). RPG Codex (not just PC but they tend to like PC style RPG titles more). Great indie games websites: TIGS. Independent Gaming. The database helps find freebies too.

Also, try this blog. Huge listings of PC games for each year from 2006 to 2010. Not all ended up good, or even already released despite being listed for past years, but it certainly shows that PC gaming is still thriving despite all the talk of its death, that's for sure. With pictures.

Buy as many games as you can while Steam sale is on.  Miss out and you'll regret it.

Holy shit! Good luck. The PC gaming library spans over 20 years. I would start with gamerankings, and narrow down your search results to types of games you might enjoy.

My main list would be: anything from Valve, anything from Blizzard, and anything from Bioware.

Don't forget about PC games that go free like Tribes and the GTA games. You can play Sim City online from Maxis I think too. Steam has a ton of old games on sale. One of the great things about PC gaming is that the farther in time you go back, the better the games get (and the smaller requirements it takes to play).

Oh yeah and GOG.com for some old games like Duke3d and fallout 1&2 and you can pick up the Might and Magic set there too.
