Is it worth upgrading from a 970 to 980?

I just got a 970 as a birthday present but I was planning to get a 980 anyway for the witcher 3. Would the boost in power be worth the extra cost?

    No...you don't need a 980 for Witcher 3.

    Recommended System Requirements

    • Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3,4 GHz
    • AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
    • Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770
    • AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
    • RAM 8GB
    • OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
    • DirectX 11
    • HDD Space 40 GB

No not really. Apparently a 980 will run everything at max, minus the hair physics, at a solid 60 fps. The 970 will fair really well with Witcher 3. Maybe not the best looking and running, but damn near close to it.

No way. Just overclock the 970 a little if you really feel the need to, but you probably won't. Especially at 1920x1200.

    @substance_d: recommended is r9 290? Oof.

Still debating whether to buy a 2nd one to tide me over or wait a yearish and just do a new build.

The Witcher 3 just might be the most expensive game I've ever wanted to play as I'd have to rebuild my entire machine and get a new monitor as well.

I think I'll just have to hold off for a bit longer as I'm in the process of buying a house.

@skullpanda1: who needs houses when you'll have the witcher to protect you from the elements?

I wouldn't. If anything, I would just get a beefy aftermarket CPU cooler and overclock it. That is still a good CPU.

If you wanted to upgrade to a modern i5 or i7 you would have to buy a new motherboard anyway. That's a lot of expense for probably not much more performance in the end. Even going from just a 2500k to a 4690k you would be looking at around $340 since you would need a new motherboard as well.

What resolution are you wanting to run things at?

A 970 is likely to run 99% of games maxed at 1080 for at least another year probably two.

Thanks for all the replies but in the end I just decided to build another rig and hand down the old one to my Mom for mother's day.
