So recently my sister's laptop screen started to get distorted colors, so she purchased a new screen and against my orders of not touching it until I looked at it myself, she tried to put the new screen in and now, its messed up(either installed incorrectly or she did something). I have the laptop with me and unfortunately I have to work in a bit so i can upload some pictures or something later to clarify the problem some more. I personally have never seen this problem but once i actually get a chance to look at it I'll know a little more about if its just an installation issue or if its something maybe you guys can help me fix,(or at least diagnose the problem).

    Thanks in advance as always.

If she has touched the lines at the back of the screen, it's all over.

Then again I don't know how exactly this ruins it; I just know that it's fatal and can't be fixed.

I do not believe she has touched the lines at the back of the screen. It seems to have been put together right, but I couldn't say if she got a bad screen or if she somehow let some static discharge onto the board or something.

You could just try removing the screen and reinstalling it, I guess.

Does it only look distorted when text is displayed, or does do images look messed up, too?

Its so bad that I can't see anything, there's another problem with it starting up now, but i can't even tell what it is. I'm going to try and hook it up externally at some point to see it more clearly, I just don't want to get into it, cause disassembling/reassembling a laptop is a pain heh.

Bummer. Sounds like there's a bigger issue than just the screen.

Hope it works out well in the end, duder.

I used to work on laptops and its virtually impossible to tell you anything given the paucity of information you've provided here. If you didn't have time to make a quality post with a detailed description of your problem and pictures, why did you make one?

How is he supposed to make one when he hasn't been there when his sister installed it.

Well, at least we did confirm that it's badly broken now.

Well I got some time together and i'm finally really sitting down with it. I did ask my sister and she said she did not touch anything inside the screen. I'll upload a video of it (do turn your sound down a bit there's music being played that I have zero control over =/ ) Picture quality isn't superb its a computer screen after all, the video will shed a little more light on it.

Edit: Alright so i got past that initial screen, and i'm on her desktop but the situation looks a f*&^ton worse than i thought.

@Deminos: I'm no professional on this matter, so maybe I'm about to say something really stupid, but, since this is the second screen that doesn't work with this laptop, isn't it possible that the issue lies with the video card? Can you connect another computer to this one using an HDMI or VDI cable and see if that works?

@Snail: That's kinda what I was thinking too. I'm no expert, but if it was doing crazy stuff with 2 different screens then it probably is something else, unless the second screen was incorrectly installed or was broken already.

I thought that could be the case but the problems are very different. The screen is bouncing like crazy on the new one and the colours are just in lines on the other one. Its also currently hooked up to my desktop monitor and its working fine ( not sure if that rules out the video card problem however.)

Well if the screen monitor works like shit with your sister's laptop and works fine with your desktop, I'd say that really favors the video card problem right?

It doesn't if my monitor is only hooked into her computer. thus working off her video card.

On the back of that 1970's set there should be a knob for V-Hold. Try adjusting that.

It almost looks like some kind of refresh/resolution error. Talking out of my ass though. What does the old screen do if you hook it back up? Maybe the ribbon is bad?

I was thinking it might be that, i was just trying to get it back apart a bit to make sure everything is plugged in nice and tight ect, but i can't get one of the panels off now grr. I'll let you guys know. However I don't understand what you mean by "On the back of that 1970's set there should be a knob for V-Hold" can you elaborate a bit more?

Old ass CRT televisions had a vertical-hold and a horizontal-hold. If the V-Hold was not calibrated it would look like the screen when you got to the desktop. It was a joke that has unfortunately showed my age :(

I knew exactly what you were talking about. I'm 21. I don't know how old you are, but I remember messing with such a thing as a kid.

Another guy taking in inexperience here:

Check the refresh rate. Your monitor probably supports many more settings than the internal display.

Pop that sucker open and check for loose or damaged connections. Those ribbon cables are fragile and one snapped wire within a cable can likely cause issues like that.

Boot it into safe mode to ensure the drivers are still OK. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Changing the refresh rate doesn't help, and i checked the other screen, it now is doing the same thing as the new one so I don't know what she did.
