A few days ago my ps3 power cord went ape shit on me. Here's what happen I had a ps3 power cord that has a shortage in it. So if I bump or move my ps3 slightly the power would cut off. I've been meaning to replace it but never got around to it. So a few days ago I was playing Street Fighter: 3rd strike, and the power to my ps3 went off by itself.

I didn't bump or move my ps3 it just went off. Then I smelled smoke and my ps3 burst out with sparks everywhere. It was like firecrackers had been lit in my room. I was afraid that my ps3 was going to explode or if my room was going to catch on fire. So I yanked the power cord off my ps3, and threw it in the sink in my bathroom I put water on the cord so it can stop smoking.

After the smoking stopped I looked at my power cord, and it was burnt to a crisp. In all my years of gaming I never seen a power cord to a console. Burst out with sparks like firecrackers. I hope I never go through that again with any console. But anyway have you had something similar like this happen to you?

I looked at the title of this thread and thought "What the hell?" but if it had a short in it, yeah, that kinda makes sense. I've never had anything like that happen to me, but I've never tried to make a habit of using damaged power cables. I hope this thread acts as a cautionary tale to anyone else who might think of doing so. Glad you're okay though duder.

Is anyone else scared to death of electricity? I would be freaking out if that happened. I've only had problems with my scalextric. The triggers for the acceleration would smell like burned plastic and they would be roasting, it was scary stuff.

When I saw electricity burst out of my power cord. It scared the hell of me and I was afraid to touch it. I didn't want to get shock but I had to get the cord out of my room. So I did what I had to do.

This is why I always keep a box of latex anal gloves by the couch. They keep me safe from the electricity due to their insulative material.

Like I said I was going to replace it but didn't get around to it. I didn't know the power cord would explode with epicness because of the shortage. The only thing I'm worried about now is my ps3. I just hope that electric surge didn't fried the circuits in the ps3. If it did then I'll be pissed at myself.

So your PS3 powercord went Star Wars in your bedroom. It never happened to me, but I've seen a fuse box do the same thing during a lightning storm.

Your PS3 should be alright... a shorting cord doesn't make more power run through it - at worst, the hard disk would have been powered on and off quickly as it shorted. It's never happened to me, but the system uses a standard PC power cord and I have dozens of the things, so I just grabbed one from the heap and used it instead.

This was an issue with MacBook Pros a few years ago - the "Magsafe" connector is just fine, but you know how the ends of a lot of USB and other cables have a sort of flexible sleeve near the end? That takes a huge amount of stress off the cord from bending, and they didn't use one because it looked cleaner... at least until the cord wore out and caught fire in many of them!

Never had that problem. You make me fear my laptops charger though. It sometimes starts making buzzing and zapping noises. I should google that to see if I'm in trouble and likely to die in an explosion. I shall do this now.

Well I'm going to order a new ps3 power cord off amazon. I would go to a gamestop store but there quite far away from where I live. The only local gamestore in my area is GameReaction. But at GameReaction they don't have shit like usually. I went to Target but they have no ps3 power cord either. Amazon seems like my best bet for a ps3 power cord.

I can't wait to get back playing on my ps3. I really want to get back to playing Street Fighter 3rd Strike and Binary Domain online.

If you are using a power-strip I would recommend replacing that as well, never really heard of something like this unless there were exposed wiring in the actual power cable. Stay lucky my friend

I've had an Original Xbox catch fire, but never a PS3. Damn thing just started smoking and melting on my desk. Called Microsoft after the fire department showed up because of the alarms in my dorm. The customer service rep wanted to know if I could plug it in to verify there where actual flames. I told her that the Fire Chief said no and had offered to speak with her if she didn't believe me. Needless to say they sent me a new Xbox.
