If I don't download anything (unless there are game add-ons...are there?) will a 40gb last me a long time?

Depends on how many and which games you play. If you play games with large installs like GTAIV or MGS4 then that 40 won't last you very long.

Many games come with installs, for example mgs4 comes witha 5 gb install, dmc4 with a 5 gb install.
Then you have the updates for each game, patches, then the update for the machine.... mmm i dont know man i think you should buy the 80 gb or upgrade the 40 gb yourself!

Honestly, a lot of games come with mandatory installs now - it fills up a 40gb pretty quick. But, if space is all your worried about grab up that 40gb model and get a larger HDD online (tigerdirect or w/e) or at a computer store. For like $100 you can grab 250gb+ and not have to worry about space.

Or when you've finished a game, delete the mandatory install files.

This is what I do, though it's a pain to sit threw the install process when you want to go back and play a level or two
