I'm trying to get a few more games for my fat PS3, but it's pretty much full in terms of space; so I figured that I should just get a PS3 slim and get a cheap external hard drive to use to transfer the information to the new hard drive.  Then I thought about just getting a compatible hard drive to replace my old 40gb one.  Regardless of the situation, I would need a new external hard drive, since the one I have is defective.  Does anyone know of any good deals I can get for either PS3 slim bundles or good hard drive replacements?

If anyone has noticed significant differences between the PS3 slim and the fat one, please inform me.

Contrary to what the guide says, I do not believe 5400 RPM is necessary.

@Kamasama:   I think the 5400 rpm drive is recommended because of excessive heat issues with faster drives.  If you can get a cool running drive that spins faster, then I don't think there would be a problem, however when the PS3 was released, faster drives potentially lead to overheating.  EDIT:  I'm not sure if anything will load any faster on a faster drive anyway.

@PenguinDust:  I know why it might be recommended (also because the minimal increase in speed probably isn't worth the increase in price), but the guide says "must have" which is incorrect. An SSD runs cooler than either and is even more expensive, but still works if that's what someone wants to use.

Upgrade, its gonna be like 80 bucks for the HDD. And if you have an iPod or Zune you could prob use that to back up. However honestly all you really should back up is your save files, you can reinstall/redownload game and demos pretty easily.

Get the new HDD and an external drive for backup/transfer to new drive. This will be a lot cheaper than buying a new system. I got a 320gb HDD for about $70 and a 500GB external for about $100.

I'm wondering about buying a 500gb HDD, instead of my 80 gb. Seems very simple to change out the drive so why not? I'm downloading so much content anyways, so I also need the extra space.

    I'm in the same situation.

It seems the smart decision would be to go for the drive

upgrade the hard drive. it would be cheaper to do that. idk if it would be good to use a external or replace the hard drive.

Upgrade, but you wouldn't need an external drive to transfer data over to your slim as long as you have an ethernet cable.

I have not long upgraded from 40gb to 500gb, but i waited till my friend bought his ps3 slim because the external drives i had were formatted with the wrong file system for the ps3 and would not recognise them. used my friends new ps3 slim to transfer the data to and from. There are some good you tube videos on how to upgrade.
