Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Bosses are enemies that fight you at the end of a level or at a significant point in the story.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
These prehistoric behemoths cause chaos amongst many. Unfortunately, they are extinct.
Dragons were originally messengers from heaven, according to early Buddhist texts. In games, they can be among the most fearsome of adversaries, but there are some exceptions.
Earning an extra life, either by collecting a 1up or by hitting a certain score.
The last boss you face in a game, usually representing the final climax of the game.
These spooky entities are the spirits of the dead, returned from beyond their graves for generally sinister purposes. There's generally about even odds whether a particular ghost will be helpful or malevolent towards the living, but some ghosts just want to be left alone entirely.
The gremlin is a relatively new concept from English Folklore, a mechanically oriented prankster with a passion for sabotaging aircraft.
All dogs go to heaven? Nobody told these.
In many games there is a ranking system, the players with the highest point value are listed in a "high score" table.
An numeral indication of how much damage a character can sustain. The loss of all hit points results in the death of the character or another penalty.
Imps are either fairy-like or lesser demonic creatures and are commonly encountered enemies in games. In Doom, they shoot fireballs at the player.
Games that feature quiz questions, often in the form of multiple choice responses.
Multipliers award players for playing well continuously. Racking up multipliers is crucial in any point based game in which they are featured.
The shark is an underwater animal that is often stereotyped for its vicious killing of prey. In video games, they are used as enemies in underwater levels or a plot device used to keep the player away from the ocean.
Arguably the most fearsome of all the reptiles - it has scales and no legs. Snakes use a variety of tactics to harm players such as poison, hypnosis, and constriction. The most deadly snakes have mastered the way of stealth.
An eight legged arachnid. Some make webs to catch prey and some are poisonous. None have made a web grand enough to be called a parlor, though.
The concept of a character leaping forwards or backwards in time.
Dinosaurs with a distinctive set of three horns on their face.
When a game incorporates trivia questions into it, even if it's not a trivia game.
Unicorns are mythological creatures, usually thought of as magical, intelligent horse-like entities with a single horn on their forehead. They can be fierce forest protectors and are a symbol of chastity and moral pureness.
