PS3 and Steam, what does that mean in practice?

Ok, so the PS3 version comes with Steam, what does that actually mean in practice? Do I have to enter a CD-key and register it with a Steam account before I can play it (thus making the game not resellable)? Or is Steam optional and just used to handle the download of Add-Ons? Can the game be used without a Steam account?

You do not need a steam account to play but if you do you can sync it and use some of the features of steam, otherwise its just like a regular PS3 game.
