Eidos Controversy Cliffnotes

Alrighty folks, here's the quick and dirty breakdown of the Eidos shenanigans. Why do I feel the need to clarify this? Listen to the latest BSHAF. Dudes are way misinformed.

  • Eidos has a reputation for fucking with journalists after Kane & Lynch
  • Eidos requested for outlets not scoring Tomb Raider Underworld an 8 or higher to hold their reviews until Wednesday, two days after the official release. This was a REQUEST, not written into any contracts or NDAs. Gamespot UK journalist posts said request on his Twitter.
  • Internet explodes for some reason, despite this having been a common practice for years. High scores are allowed to go up earlier by publishers. It only makes sense to let favorable impressions out as early as possible, and delay negative ones. Simple public relations. See also: Exclusive reviews and their correlation to absurdly high scores.
  • Eidos' PR firm told the truth about said shenanigans when asked. For some reason telling the truth is unacceptable, and the internet further explodes.
  • Eidos' PR firm covers their asses, tells a lie. Apparently lying is ALSO unacceptable, and further internet hijinks ensue. I don't exactly see the correct course here, if you're going to get mad no mater what they say :\
  • Queue people bitching about Eidos trying to "control the independent press" and whatnot.
  • This is false. Falsehoods. Lies, if you will. The request is for reviews to be held for two days. After that, reviews are free to go up wherever, whatever the score, without threat of repurcussion. The desire is to have two days of fairly high metacritic. Now, is that entirely ethical? No. But those two days are unlikely to affect a great many sales. And it's not even a requrement or anything, simply a request which press is free to ignore.
  • Ethical? No. But not hardly the big deal people are making it out to be. I think the problem here is that people are looking at it through a lens of Gerstman, which inclines them to hate on Eidos and assume this is a crime against independent journalism. Which it is not. Not nearly. So stop taking it as an affront on your sensibilities, and proof that Eidos is the evil empire and we need to fly our X-Wing squadron over there and blow them up. Look at it in the proper context, and the proper scale, and realize that it's not a very big deal.

Game reviews are hardly even that relevant anymore in their current format, with demos and gameplay footage and screenshots anyways. Enough data exists for you to form an objective opinion without a critic's input these days. But that's an argument for another time.

Hopefully, you guys will stop blowing these Edios shenanigans out of proportion now :)
