Princess Aerial & The Sweet Science is mercifully done, defeated by Ray Finkle's Revival 3-0 (5-1, 5-2, 3-1).

Plenty of time to get all the negativity out of my head from my miserable performance before it's time to consider another tournament!

Week 1 is in the books! Great job, everyone. That's as hectic as it's going to get.

All scores were marked down as submitted in this thread, via PM, or based on what I saw in the case of stinkyasian's stream. I played a little loose with the whole "losing team reports" thing (process improvement for future tournaments there!), so if you see a score that doesn't look right, let me know within 24 hours and I'll dig into it.

Ray Finkle's Revival vs. Close, But No Crossbar has an extension into week 2, but otherwise, I'll send out the remaining group matches tomorrow via new PMs. You pretty much know who you have left to face at this point. Those new matches will be due by March 6th at 11:59 PM EST.

Good luck, everyone!

@turboman: If you could confirm this result when you get a chance, that'd be awesome. Thanks!

I know the weekend's just begun, but given I only have 3 of the 12 week 1 match results at the moment, it seems important to push out a quick reminder.

Remember that the week 1 match deadline is tomorrow at 11:59 PM EST. That's less than 32 hours away. If you have any issues scheduling matches (captains have the schedules in their PMs, and everyone can check out this handy bracket), you need to let me know ASAP. Several teams have done this already (which I greatly appreciate), and in the case of Ray Finkle's Revival vs. Close, But No Crossbar, I've allowed for an extension so they can complete their match on Monday. If you don't contact me regarding scheduling issues, I have to assume the worst, which is that your team simply forgot about the tournament. That means automatic losses.

So, to quickly summarize:

  • Get your matches done by the end of Sunday (EST): No issues, you're good, awesome, you have my thanks.
  • Contact me for any scheduling issues, be it matches past the deadline or other problems contacting/scheduling with other teams: You'll get an extension until next week, but all three group matches will be due March 6th. This is fine.
  • Don't contact me with any issues and fail to complete your matches in time: You'll be tagged with automatic losses this week. If both teams in a match didn't speak up and let the deadline lapse, you get the honor of having a 0-0 draw. Don't be a team in this category.

Best of luck out there!

Our second game for the week is in the books! @joeyf and his crew gave us a great match, including an incredibly close final game where I basically felt like Nyquist here (thanks cooljammer00):

No Caption Provided

  • Big League Joey and the Fameli Rockets defeat Princess Aerial & The Sweet Science, 3-1 (3-1, 4-5, 3-2, 1-0)

@Trace what's the exact format for the tournament? Looks like each team has 3 matches in their group, and does that determine seeding? And then from there does every team advance to the elimination stage or only the top 2/3 per group?

Good luck everyone! Should be fun.

Think of it like a mini-World Cup. Each team's in a pool with three other teams. Everybody in that group/pool/conference will play each other once, and that will determine the top six to move on to the elimination round, two from each group. The seeding in the elimination stage should be set (if Challonge does this right) so that the two best-performing teams of the six finalists will also get a first-round bye.

In short, 12 teams round-robin, then a 6-team single-elimination bracket.

EDIT:

I saw your tweet yesterday @Trace and meant to sign up but I got distracted and completely forgot. D'oh. Oh well, I hope some teams stream this out. I'd like to watch. Can we use the spectator mode for this?

If I'm reading this right, I'd say that given how lobbies work, I imagine it'd be preferable for teams to stream it out or designate somebody to hold the spectator role and stream it out like that. Having random spectators join a lobby could cause some complications if somebody were to attempt to join a match.

The tournament is underway! I've sent all the team captains their respective pool and match-up information for this week. Everyone can view the current pool information at http://challonge.com/gbsnowday to see how the tournament's proceeding.

I didn't mention this in the PMs -- an oversight on my part -- but two extra points:

  1. Feel free to stream your matches, and let me know beforehand (@PsEG on Twitter) and I'll try and hype them up.
  2. You have the full week to schedule and play your matches, but if any round finishes well ahead of schedule, I will start the next round early.

Good luck, have fun, and looking forward to hearing of match results!

That's 12 teams! Registration is OVER. I have preliminary tournament stuff ready to go, and I'll finalize all the details and send them out sometime tomorrow.

As for this earlier question...

Will there be a stream of these matches?

Short answer: Not really.

Long answer: I don't consider this a priority for this tournament, as I just want to make sure we don't run into too many logistical hitches in the process of running the tournament. That said, if the opportunity presents itself without causing any scheduling issues, this might be worth a try, especially for the finals. I also have no issue whatsoever with a team streaming their own match, just as long as it isn't causing lag or creating some sort of SushiX-brand lag switch situation.
