Blog #038 - Red Dead Poster, Portal 2, Monkey Island

What do all these games have in common? Nothing! Nothing I had in mind anyway, except I'm going to write about them in this blog.

Red Dead Redemption

I may be a year late, but I was thinking about Red Dead Redemption and I have 2 designs to do today for my daily design blog. Looking at vintage movie posters (mainly mean streets and the birds) I wanted to make a movie poster for the game. Initially I thought of doing it in the style of a western poster but that has already been done, so I didn't go with the obvious choice.

Personally? I had a lot of great ideas about the smoke forming mexico, the wedding ring being on the gun.... but I didn't combine them efectively enough. There's too much text and too much dead weight around in the composition.

Here it is. Leave comments and feedback, I love to read them.

Love the game.

Portal 2

 Amazing Artwork

Portal 2 finally arrived. I went through it in one 8 hour sitting and enjoyed every minute of it. I could go on for an eternity about how enjoyable I found the story, characters, overall writing and gameplay but I won't. I got stuck a few times because I hadn't seen a surface I could shoot a portal on, but generally the game was easy enough. Like Jeff said on the bombcast, games are thrill rides. I want my thrill ride. Portal 2 makes you feel smart enough without challenging you too much.

Really enjoyed the section with the old test chambers and most of all, Cave Johnson.

I made a portal 2 poster during the wait which you can check out here.

I also just made this. A poster in the style of the safety posters during the 50s section of Portal 2.

I have had these forever after buying all 5 chapters in a Steam sale. I have wanted to get in to Telltale Game's adventure games for quite a while but they aren;t the most exciting or engaging games. Apart from being stumped on a puzzle or 2 I have had a very pleasant experience. Love the characters and world they have set up. The graphics are nice but the style of animation is so disjointed it bugs me sometimes.

I might do an illustration of Morgan soon. She has an impossibly thin waist.

Love the Red Dead Redemption poster, I checked out your work on your website. Very good stuff.
I will keep you in mind if I ever need someone of your expertise.
Out of interest what university do/did you go to?

Do you make professional prints of these, if not you should consider it. You could make a good amount of money from it.

@PieGuy: Thanks. My website is terribly outdated, but my blog is the most recent stuff. Currently rebuilding my website from scratch and making a mobile version that should all be up in 2 weeks time.
I go to University of Brighton in association with Sussex Downs College.

That poster is amazing, but I think it could do without the IGN quote.

Might I request a poster relating to Call of Duty: World at War, and in particular the Soviet campaign? I can see you doing some downright spectacular stuff with it, if the Red Dead Redemption poster is anything to go by! You totally should get these made as prints, because I could see myself wanting a print of a World at War themed design, and perhaps something relating to Modern Warfare 2's Vladimir Makarov - and yeah, I'm being serious.

It's just a case of getting the money to actually do it. :P

@xMP44x: I haven't played World at War, so I doubt I'd ever do one. If I were to do anything you like you can always request the full image. I make the to A3 size prints so you could just take them to a printers.

I am also a huge fan. If you check on my website I've also done Godot, Gant, Ema Skye, Trucy Wright and Miles Edgeworth. In 5 years I might have every character.

Yeah, I noticed the Godot one. Best AA character in my option.
I'm sad to hear Investigation 2 will not make it here, but to be completely honest, it was not so fun outside the court.

@Kjellm87: I completely agree. I want it to come here but I never really enjoyed investigations the same as main series. I thought Apollo Justice was far and away better simply because of the courtroom action. It sucks that the only time you go there in investigations is to... investigate.
I need to do an Apollo Justice. Also, Godot is my favourite character too.

I wouldn't mind a new Apollo Justice, but I'm not sure what that character could do next, everything turned out so perfectly fine for both him and Phoenix in the end.
Also AJ was a little on the easy side I think. With Phoenix you had to gamble a little. ( Victim of blackmail that blackmails, anyone?)

It was easier, especially with the refilling life bar between all sections. What you're talking about though I don't consider difficulty. It's not a gamble when some of the connections you have to make are so arbitrary. It throws off the whole logic puzzle vibe. There are many completely weird ones. None in Apollo Justice. Infact, during the last case you're just kind of going through it, but I'm fine with that. I can't see another main series game again though... which is a shame. Plus Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright probably isn't going to be the game I want it to be.

If I may offer some constructive criticism, the RDR poster only half works for me.  I like the style you are going for, and it is competently put together.  However, with these types of pictures it is usual, and therefore expected by the viewer, that the different elements will blend together to make an overall picture.  For example, the gun barrel on the left appears to have smoke coming from it, and that smoke should therefore be some part of the image in the upper part of the picture.  The barrel extending down from the top is a bit incongruous too, adding nothing to either the top or the bottom of the scene.

I will add that it was still far, far better than that Western-style poster you linked to that was far too busily constructed.

Keep going with this though, you are clearly skilled and only need to work on the specifics of your layouts.  I checked out your blog, some cool stuff there.  Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks. :) The blog is still my best stuff, but I've been tinkering with my site for a bit and will add some of the blog stuff to that.
I use Photoshop. A lot of my stuff looks like vectors, and should be, I just find illustrator much harder to use. It sucks having everything as a raster though. I'll need to learn. The only thing that was made in illustrator is my Saul Bass project and my cereal box design.

Placing myself next to buzz is a large stretch. I'm nowhere near that good. But I would like that. I post a lot of design blogs (I think the one after this has 40 of them in one post).

No, but now that I have graduated and am moving in to freelance/a real job I'm going to start looking in to making my own. I usually combine and collage a lot of different effects and textures from various royalty free sources. Occasionally a brush. It's almost 6am now and I've almost finished working on a piece for a friends birthday today that I will be posting in about 15 hours or so. I punish myself with this stuff.
