My 2 month experience with the Kinect!!

As the Kinect is being launched tonight my Non-disclosure agreement ends

I received my Kinect at the end of August because I was accepted in to the Kinect Beta program, I have to say this thing is fun we got given 2 games to try out Kinect Sports and Joyride to download from the Kinect HUB (Is where you will be taken when you say XBOX Kinect from the Dashboard). The first version of Kinect Sports I downloaded had 5 sports they were Long jump, Javelin, Co-Op 100m Dash, Bowling and Soccer (Football) and later the second version had Volleyball. Table Tennis and Bowling all games were fun especially the when you played against another player my favourite was the Soccer (football) because I’m a big fan of the sport and plus I was diving around like an idiot trying to save the ball from going in the net which made great viewing on the video highlights when you finished a match. Joyride was tough at first because it was hard controlling the cars it didn’t responded to you very well when you were steering the cars but after a couple of update thanks to the feedback from the beta testers it worked very well. The battle mode was great when you can fire weapons at your opponents to do this just hold you left arm to the side to fire your weapon and my favourite part is where you can change the colour of your car all you do is find an object you want a colour of and hold up to the camera and it scans the object colour it was quite cool have my car the same colour as Mountain Dew.

A couple weeks later we were given a new game to download and this was Kinect  Adventures if you want to lose weight and get fit this is the game for you with all the moving about (and banging my head in to a wall) you will get tired. This was the most fun I had especially with another player when the other player jumps in (literally jumps in to join you) they can help you get to other higher areas on the River Rush (white-water dingy) level when you do a double jump first you jump then player jumps that pulls off a double jump. The other game modes were 20,000 leaks (you are in a glass cage and fish and shark smash the sides and you have to use your arm and legs to cover up the holes), RallyBall (Hit the ball and break the boxes and collect Pins), Reflex Ridge (You are on a track and you have to duck, jump and move out of the way of obstacles and the player with the most pins win) and Space Pop (You are floating in the air and have to pop all the bubbles Flap your hands to go higher)

That’s it for the games I tested, we also got to try out the Kinect enabled Zune and Sky Player (only for U.K version need sky subscription) all it is you can control with your hands and voice (XBOX Stop, XBOX Play etc) works well when you don’t want to use your controller.

Video Kinect an application so you can chat to your friends on the XBOX or via MSN works very well especially if you move around your room and the Kinect tracks you.

Will the Kinect be a hit or a miss? I'll think it will be a hit as long it doesn't go down the same road as the Wii and release very poor 3rd party titles Microsoft need a good veto system on what games would get release for the Kinect and not the same rubbish that got released for the Wii.

Sorry if the post is short just got things to do :P

Awesome feedback!  I think I'll still see, like you said, where they take it.  If there are just a bunch of Wii-like games, then I'll probably pass on it.  I still think that they need a controller/Kinect hybrid game like the PlayStation move.  You need that feedback when playing games.  For now, I'll save up for the Xbox bundle that comes with incase I decide to take the plunge!

since the NDA has expired i will throw in my two cents, i have had Kinect since August as well and played the same 3 games

while Kinect can be fun in short burts, im not sure it is something "core" gamers are going to get into, at least not yet, the main reason being the launch titles (this applies to almost any hardware launch and is not just indicitive to Kinect). there are some issues with Jank and Lag (think bam there it is) but for the most part the calibration set up does a pretty good job

make sure you have adequete room in front of your sensor, make sure your room is lit well, and that there is minimal backround noise (fans, air conditioning etc) in August it was hard to use the sensor because the room it was in had an AC, Kinect does not like alot of backround noise.

Kinect sports was the most fun, Adventures was ok, and Joyride i did not like much at all...i will be checking out some of the other launch titles as we got to keep our Kinect sensors, and if you have children, or wives, girlfriends/boyfriends etc, you will probably get alot more out of Kinect than some others. There is alot of fun to be had, especially in group settings, parties etc, just really make sure you have the room to play it properly as it WILL effect your experience

also, the voice commands work really well, but sometimes the hand motions dont (in my experience) and often you have to wave to the sensor like a madman to get it to recognize hand motions, im sure MS will work out the kinks though in software updates

Some interesting testimonials here. There's no way Kinect isn't going to be a hit, this thing is going to sell very well, however, I maintain my view that Kinect isn't and never was intended for traditional gaming audiences. I do however feel that the crappy 3rd-party Kinect titles are an inevitability, there's every reason for them to happen and no reason for them not to.
