Hey guys, we need a little more diagnostic information from folks that are experiencing these video problems. * Where do you live? * Provide the output of the two commands below. # On Windows, open a Command Prompt and run C:\> nslookup –type=txt identity.cloudfront.net C:\> nslookup –type=txt resolver-identity.cloudfront.net # On MacOS open the Terminal application. On Linux, you should know how to open a Terminal :) $> dig +short -t txt identity.cloudfront.net $> dig +short -t txt resolver-identity.cloudfront.net * Provide a traceroute to your primary DNS server # On Windows, open a Command Prompt and run C:\> ipconfig /all # find the line that says "DNS Server". It should be an IP Address C:\> tracert YOUR_DNS_SERVER_IP_ADDRESS # the address from the step above # On MacOS open the Terminal application $> cat /etc/resolv.conf # at the bottom, you should see a line like "nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx" -- the xx.xx.xx.xx is the address $> traceroute xx.xx.xx.xx Please feel free to ask questions if you don't understand any of these steps.
I've thought about this and talked to a few other of the Top Men here at Whiskey. It's hard to know for sure what's happening here since none of us are seeing it. However, this really sounds like a DNS issue. Would someone who's having this issue care to be a guinea pig and help us out?
The next time you see this issue, go to a command prompt. (On Windows, click the Start Menu, click "Run", type "cmd" into the box and press enter. On mac, run the Terminal.app application). Once you're at a command prompt, run these two commands:
ping giantbomb.com
ping www.giantbomb.com
You should see output that looks similar to this:
PING giantbomb.com (50.17.211.13): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 50.17.211.13: icmp_seq=0 ttl=44 time=91.248 ms
Please copy and paste your output for each of those commands and send it to me, either via PM or in this thread. Do this immediately after you're seeing the redirect errors.
@The_Laughing_Man: We have a bunch of tasks that run in the background. Things like keeping search up-to-date, running achievements, etc. Some of those things are kicked off at regular intervals throughout the day. It just happens that at 9PM PST, a bunch of that stuff is getting kicked off at the same time, which eats a bunch of processing power and slowing everything else down.
We're going to bring a new server online tonight to offload a lot of these background tasks to. This should keep it from having an impact on page load times.
