Playing to your strengths

Quite a few years ago, I started working on a universe which seemed to lend itself well to quite a bit of story branching. I thought about all the directions I could go with a story. So recently, I've been working with XNA; learning the ropes. I started making an old fashion, SNES-era, RPG with little effort. I decided to use the universe I've been working on as the background. After making a tile set and designing a scene to test things in, I realized I was making a game.

I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a battle system with some improved mechanics. Allowing influences from more modern and recent RPGs, I designed a simple stats system and made some skills for characters to use. I had a lot of trouble balancing it and decided I was just spinning my wheels. It ended up being way too complex and it was scrapped. I stepped back from the whole thing and started to question my motives for wanting to make an RPG.

To put it simply: I had none. I play a lot of RPGs and I automatically equated story driven game with RPG without giving it much thought. However, adventure games are highly focused on story and have little to no fighting. I enjoyed the adventure games I've played, so why didn't I consider that? I have no idea. So now I'm considering it. I enjoy writing fiction and an adventure game would allow me to focus more on the fiction. Why not just write a story or a movie? That one is easy, I like games and I'm a programmer in my day job.

(NOTE: No one may actually care about this. I basically wrote this to get the quest done. I didn't want to write something meaningless just to get it though.)
