Let's Talk Fallout 3

Hey, is this thing on?

Oh, hi there. I used to blog at Giant Bomb. But...not so much these days. But I'm still writin'. What have I been writing about? Thanks for asking, bud. I appreciate the question.

Fallout 3 is the answer. In particular, the Vault sequence of Fallout 3, which I found particularly awesome. So after reading my glorious thoughts on the matter, how did you like the Vault sequence? Anything you thought they could have done better? Etc., etc.,

Let's have a girl talk about this game. Maybe even make it a weekly thing, just between us.

Really, the only thing I liked about the Vault Sequence was the GOAT questions.

I just started again recently as well after buying all the DLC for it. I have to say playing Operation Anchorage was a great first quest to do right after leaving the vault you get some pretty sweet gear.

Really? No connection with the father at all? You didn't like how they implemented character creation?

I enjoyed the Vault sequence but I didn't take the beating up Butch route like you did but I did save his mother and killed the Overseer, which I am sure will have an effect later on since there is a sidequest relating to going back to the Vault I believe.

I thought that the baby book used as a skill defining means was such a wicked idea.

Hey, you're on Planet Fallout... check it out...

As for the vault part itself, I think it was okay, "Dad" is pretty interesting, but thinking back to my first game I don't think I was all that concerned about him once I found out he left (I mean I wasn't surprised about it, if you were following Fallout 3 at that time it was common knowledge). I wish that Dad was more prominent in the main story but that is probably one of Fallout 3's greatest weaknesses is that the main story is not all that great compared to all the other stuff you could be doing in the wasteland.

The first character I played was good so I saved Butch's mother and ignored the Overseer. The second time tho, I told Butch to "fuck off" and then shot his ass. Choice is the driving factor in Fallout 3 and the vault is a nice introduction to that.

Cool! :)

I agree about the introduction part. It'll be interesting to see what impact my choices early on will have as I continue on in the game.

It is interesting to hear that he doesn't play a prominent role in the main story. I had reach Rivet City in my previous playthrough, before I started back over, so I know I've yet to meet back up with ol' Pappy...so in that respect, yes, it is a little annoying that he doesn't factor more into the overall game. Especially considering the side quests, which can distract you and make you lose focus and breaking all the connections you have with the early characters. It's natural in that sense, because it's taken so long for you to get some sort of feedback on those threads, which lessen their effect.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing the game, but what little there is of an actual STORY--no doubt hacked out in committee--is often painful to endure. The main plot hinges on the ridiculous premise that it doesn't rain--implied if not actually stated.  With a few exceptions, the characters are more like cardboard cut-outs than real people. Three-dog is the only bright spot in the game, in that regard for me, at least. Nothing I say should be considered an absolute; I'm saying how the game impacted ME. It would be nice if developers cared as much about the actual WRITING of the story they want to tell, as they do about game-engines and graphics.
