@laxbro19: I felt this was one of the most boring races all year. Starting under safety completely removed Hamilton's inability to start well as a handicap, and also prevented a repeat of my favorite moment of this season by not giving the two mercs a chance to take each other out in the first couple corners. I enjoyed watching Max skid about and recover, and there were a couple of good battles here and there, but man, this was more boring a race than I've ever seen at silverstone. It's a real bummer, I like that track, both to spectate and to fake drive in VG form.

@dweezilx: I imagine if you are super budget conscious and are just looking for a game to play for a large number of hours rather than something to be impressed by, then get a civ game or an MMO or something instead of this. I have played seven hundred hours of civ 5, and mebbe 4 of this, and I'm super happy with both.

@hippie_genocide: while I agree that PSN is dogshit, I don't have bad luck with XBL. It's certainly no Steam, but I can usually pull a game down in an hour or so.

I think the general points that the console marketplaces are priced poorly for a bunch of people and that for many people the Internet service is either too poor or usage metered are valid. I tend to buy games when they come out, and I'm fortunate enuf to have access to an OK Internet connection, but a shocking number of people don't. I don't get an impression from either console manufacturer that there are market forces driving them to change their pricing, it seems they are content to let the cheaper crowd exist entirely separate from their stores.

As a side bar, I primarily play games on a pc, and haven't purchased physical media of any sort in years. The argument of "I just like holding stuff" sounds like an episode of hoarders to me.

what's really bizzare is that the performance seems random. I'm running an OK not top of the line setup, and I've not had any problems with stutter or artifacting whatsoever. If i'm tearing ass through the city and stuff is blowing up around me, my fps drop to around 40, but otherwise everything is nice and steady. Admittedly I'm only playing at 1080P, but still.

But compare my specs to some rigs the RPS guys were trying to use, and they are basically identical. Their copy apparently runs like hot garbage. So weird.

WB dropped the ball in some way on this, even if LangCo screwed the pooch, it seems like this thing runs poorly for a huge number of people.

Final thought: yes it's dumb that they limited the fps in an ini file to 30 (i assume to try to coverup/account for the poor performance), but it's a 2 second process to change the value to 60 or 120 or whatever you want. YES it's nice when a developer doesn't obfuscate that stuff, but it sounds like that's a damn small problem. At a certain point, I feel that if you are using a pc to play games, running a google search is not beyond the pale.

It's stupid that shit has gotten so bad that the editor's of a site that I turn to for entertainment and commentary on entertainment feels that they have to speak up. I imagine none of the editor's particularly WANT to have to be constantly thinking about this stuff; the amount of harm caused to the current and future state of what is my and almost certainly their form of expression and entertainment is unfortunately unavoidable. Add to that the fact that many of them are personally acquainted with some of the people at the center of this shitstorm, and I get why they feel they need to make some sort of statement.

I'm fortunate in that I just play games and don't engage with the internet community as a whole; I haven't tried to have a conversation on a message board for 20 years, because usenet burned out of me any hope for reasonable civil discourse with 13 year old boys. Today, a group of jerks have a combination of improved technology and the access to social media minded developers and commentors, and are using that combination to AT BEST act out power fantasies against people that they have decided they disagree with.

The thin veil of concern over games journalism has nothing to do with the bullshit going on. If you are really concerned about if your video games are being accurately reviewed or whatever, 1st) a review is an opinion of an individual. If you don't trust that individual, DON'T TRUST THAT INDIVIDUAL, find a different reviewer that you do trust. 2nd) the well is currently poisoned by the people sending death/rape threats. If you want to have that conversation, you should wait for the children/assholes to get bored and wander off, or for them to get arrested.

I'm struggling to understand why microsoft has been so bad at messaging regarding the xbone. I have one, it's nice, I will own a ps4 when a game i care about is released exclusively on the system, and that system will also likely be fine. the actual hardware/firmware in both of these cases seems perfectly fine, but Microsoft continues to make these dumb marketing errors. You can argue that the existing enthusiast press website news cycle (likely the internet news cycle in general) is terrible, but it is what it is. It seems it would behoove MS to put all of the executives that it has speaking on behalf of its company in a room and tell them "if you dont know what you are talking about, shut your mouth".

I'm less disappointed in Oculus as a real product, since it wasn't really a product yet. I'm more disappointed because it transitioned from being a company making a cool thing to being facebook trying to find a way to make money. Whenever the retail product comes out, we'll evaluate it on its actual merit like responsible people, but I no longer have any excitement for it. In one press release they managed to push me from "this looks pretty nifty" to "I guess we'll see what this thing is", and there are so few things that are genuinely new and exciting in tech that I feel bad when one is plucked away.
