Which game should I beat before my break ends?

So I got to borrow my cousins PS3 and I'm going to keep it until the end of my winter recess. It ends next Monday. So my cousin gave me Final Fantasy XIII and my friend gave me Fallout New Vegas. I already put like 9-10 hours in New Vegas but the game is so extremely hard with the factions like the Powder Gang shooting at me as soon as they see me or those Deathclaws and Deathkin running at mach speed and destroying me. I loved Fallout 3 and I feel like New Vegas is nowhere as awesome as Fallout 3. But I still love Fallout. This one is just going to take a lot of time to get through. I also got hands on in FF XIII once and I disagree with everyone because I pretty much enjoyed it. So now my question is:

Should I stay playing New Vegas or should I jump into FF XIII?

@EVO: Then I'd need to go out of my way to borrow Heavy Rain and that's a lot of work. I beat Uncharted 1 and have no money to buy a game nor a friend with Uncharted 2.

@HandsomeDead: @birdflu777: I don't understand those bullet cases shit. What does that do? I repaired a shitload of them and all my real bullets were gun so I had to load up the last file and I put all those cases in a grave. :P

Pretty much avoid Deathclaws till you hit lvl 30, I didn't like FFXIII so I'd have to say new vegas.  It's a ton of fun.

You've only been playing for 10 hours and you're already running into deathclaws?

@FancySoapsMan: I know how to play it! I just want to get to New Vegas but it's a challenge. In Fallout 3, I kicked their ass. Now I can't. I hate how you get perks every 2 levels and the skill books are temporary. But from now, I'm just going to grind levels and keep killing those powder jerks.

If you're gonna kill some Deathclaws use the bean bag ammo or whatever they're called that is available to shotguns. Those worked fine for me since they knock them down for an unusually lengthy time. Just make sure to draw one at a time, but two can be handled easily if you're any good at shooting.

If you were playing it on PC I would vote for New Vegas, but the console version of the game looks down right atrocious. So I vote for FF XIII.

I'd go with Fallout, turn the difficulty down and take the way the game presents to you. That way you'll be lvl 15 to 20 by the time you hit New Vegas.

I'd cry with joy in front of the mailman, tell my girlfriend we need to take a break, put that disc in and play til I beat it. If that were to happen though. I played the demo yesterday and omfg. I've been playing some good games recently, Assassin's Creed 2, Dead Space, New Vegas, and to me, none of these compare to that game. It's just pure awesome badassery. And yes, I played the demo only but that spoke enough. The demo was like an 80 minutes long and I NEEDED more after it finished.

I would have totally gave it back dude. I'm not an asshole and I'm an honest dude. Plus, I wouldn't want someone doing the same thing to me. I'd also count the whole GiantBomb community better friends then my actual friends! Because they suck. But yes, you got my hopes up a lot so enjoy these people crying. :DDD I appreciate you offering though. Thanks man.

@Undeadpool: I know it doesn't but when I beat Fallout 3, I had most of the trophies so it was like, "WTH? The trophies are super easy so why not?" I spent a second playthrough getting the trophies I missed and I planned on buying the dlc's to keep going but my ps3 got the ylod so it was completely gone. I just  told my brother to call his friend to take his account off a ps3 so I can download the dlc's because honestly, Fallout 3 is number 1 on my list of favorite games. I would put another playthrough just cuz I love the game so good damn much!

@awesomeusername: Eh, honestly? NV is vastly superior to Fallout 3. The storyline is much more interesting, the character interactions are far-and-away superior and more nuanced. I can name ten characters from New Vegas, I don't think I could name half that number from Fallout 3. Don't get me wrong, I liked 3 for what it was, but it lacked the salty personality of Fallouts 1 and 2 (and even Tactics) which NV captures much, much better.

@Undeadpool: Yeah, I never played any other Fallout beside 3 and now NV. But those 10 hours in NV make me feel like 3 is still better. I mean, NV seems really good. I'll give my pros and cons breakdown.

New Vegas

Pros: I find the characters and the storyline to be very interesting so far and some concepts are improved from 3. Examples being the aiming which is miles better, the better karma system, the factions, scavenging, the encounters every turn you make, etc. etc.

Cons: I don't feel as excited scavenging the wasteland as I did in 3. Yeah, 3 was pretty empty but whenever you found a place, it was pretty big and full of people, enemies, cool discoveries. In NV, everytime I find a place, it's either empty or really small. It's also really hard trying to survive with enemies coming at you left and right. Then, you have the factions which are good, but also annoying but makes it more interesting for another playthrough, to see what happens when you do things in a different way. As much encounters as you go through, I still feel alone in the wasteland.

My opinion might change after beating NV but still, to me, 3 was like a first dog that I loved so much until he died and when I got a new dog, I loved it so much too, but it'll never replace 3, no matter how better it is. It's silly comparing these games to dogs but that's the best comparison I can make at the moment because I'm kind of sick and thinking is too much right now.

You raise some valid points in your cons, but my problem with Fallout 3 was that yes, the wasteland was bigger, and yes, there were more locations to find, but it felt like over half of them amounted to a great, big "meh." I found so many locations that were simply holding raiders. I'd clear them out and...nothing. Nada. Some minor loot, but ultimately it was just a set piece. NV may have had fewer locations, but I felt like almost every single one had a story to tell. Though, to be fair, I played it a bit more thoroughly than I did 3.

@awesomeusername: Just in case you don't know, you can switch your gun's ammo type. I don't know which button it is on either console version (it's 2 on PC), but I guess it might be mapped to one of the d-pad directions. Anyways, as to whether I know where to find some bean bag ammo for certain, I do not know. You just need to come across some in your playthrough to use, but should you fight any Deathclaws, as long as you single them out and aim to cripple their limbs after a long-range shot to the head, you should be fine, or at least I was before I figured out that the bean bag ammo was considered overpowered.

@Undeadpool: It is true that a bunch of places held raiders, super mutants, ghouls, etc., there was a lot of exploration. I still found these places with all these guys worth the trouble though because it takes a lot of time to go to point a to point b if you're walking. And I remember the tunnels. Oh god. Those tunnels. They were hell to navigate but I was always thrilled whenever I found a new area. Even if it was filled with baddies, it felt so good to find new locations and the fun of exploring so many places. I also liked how each place you went to, with civilized people, was really fun because there's places in these places to explore. Like the vault in the place where the children hide. Or in Rivet City(the giant boat that's broken in half), had a lot of story behind it that I didn't even expect. So to me, a bunch of places were kind of useless with a few raiders and stimpacks, but you can also find things you needed to make weapons, repair things, etc that were vital to you surviving in the wasteland. All in all, I found every area of Fallout 3 worth finding because it was just so fun exploring and checking the place out. You should play through 3 some more, explore the whole wasteland. I did that and there's some interesting things you can find. Everything I stated in this reply, is the biggest reason why I loved FO3. I never put so many hours into a game and still felt compelled to play.

@rjayb89: Yupp, I have no idea how to do that. My brother borrowed the guide book from my friend but that shit is to big and there's too many things going on in each page. I bought an extended magazine for my varmint rifle and have no clue on how to equip it.  WASTE OF OVER 200 CAPS! There's also no way to single out deathclaws. Those bastards chase you in a pack!

@awesomeusername: I'm with you on the fun of exploration, and I appreciate the effort you put into a post like that! One of the reasons I love Giant Bomb is because two users like yourself and me can have a conversation where we actually talk about the finer points of a game rather than just calling each other "n00b f4gs" and cackling to ourselves. I still disagree, though. I felt like New Vegas did more with each and every single location (Vault 11...tell me you found Vault 11), though I do see what you mean with the "civilized" places being way cooler in 3, and I'd actually probably agree with you. NV's towns were all pretty much the same, and then you had the New Vegas strip, which was cool but also kinda "second verse, same as the first," but I felt more compelled to explore all the NV locations because I never knew what I was going to uncover. With F3 I always felt like "Well, I COULD explore this place and it MIGHT have something cool, but most likely it'll just be more raiders..." But don't get me wrong, I love 3 and I might actually go back to it as you recommend, especially since I bought almost all the DLC and still haven't beaten some of it (whoops!).

I wonder if you're actually going to read this. You better dammit! I've literally have been writing this for like 20 minutes! It takes me forever to write a lot. It's why I hate writing!

@Undeadpool:
Haha, yeah. I hate people who do that. It's annoying and they're just immature and don't know how to talk to people. But hey, I'm farther in New Vegas right now. I put a bunch of hours into it a day. I played about 11 hours today. Yes, that's ridiculous, but I have a break from school this week and like I said on my OP, it's my cousins PS3 and I'm lucky enough my mom hasn't taken it back! So I'm throwing in as much game time as I can while sharing the PS3 with my brother, who unfortunately decided to play Fallout 3 but I can't complain because he got New Vegas for me from his friend. Back to the point though, I've already done about 20 quests. I'm in the middle of like 10 quests right now. It's so agitating having that many quests to do. I haven't been to Vault 11 but I know I got a mission from a doctor to go to a vault and his assistant said a friend of hers went to the vault and hasn't returned so she wants me to look for her. Maybe that's the vault, I'll check tomorrow if the PS3 is still here. Hopefully it is. But since my last reply, I've visited over 50 locations, I got the trophy for finding 50 locations already, and what you said about every place in NV having it's own story is true. I'm actually interested in exploring now because every place has it's own story to tell with every citizen asking for help and going on missions. Like Freeside, that's the place outside of the Strip, you have this town where everyone is poor and almost dying because the lack of food, you have the Followers of the Apocalypse helping as many people as they can, you need to help 2 people get over chem addictions, you're nearly being chased down every street by people trying to rob you, you have stores asking you to do things for you, you got that gang, the Kings and you do quests for them and then the NCR and the Kings have this battle you're trying to stop and their boss gives you Rex as a partner, and so much other things. I was surprised with Freeside because even though it's big in size, there's only like 5 actual buildings you can go to and there's so much things to do for these people it's crazy. I just hate that store that sells energy weapons because they're destroying caravans and they want to kill Cass, the follower that's a bitch, and they owned the shit out of me so I loaded my save up and ran out that store. I want to kill them so bad but I'm easily outnumbered in there and their weapons are ridiculously strong. I'll find a way though, I'm going to kick their asses. I promise you that. But beside that, I guess I did need a little more time with NV because now I love it. The only problem is that there's sooooooo much dialogue, I now find myself skipping most the conversations I have... I don't know why. But this game seems flawless besides that. Oh! I also hated when I wanted to finally go to the Strip but I had to walk there because I hadn't been there yet, so I was just walking, saw 2 deathclaws and immediately walked along the edge of the road. Then 1 started running up to me and I had Boone and ED-E on my team so we started shooting it and like 10 more just popped out and I made a run for it. I left my team but 2 deathclaws caught up to me and owned me. And when I said 10 deathclaws, I literally meant 10. I was angry that they would even put 10 of those in one spot. But I just loaded it back up and found a different route and made it with no problem. What you also said about the Strip is correct. I was disappointed by it because there's only 5 or 6 casinos when I expected at least a  little city to explore. But at least each casino gives you a lot of things to do. I can't wait to finish this game though. I hope I can finish it before my cousin takes it back. It seems like it's worth every minute and I'm telling you now, I am buying this game after I get my PS3 and the games I want to play. It's completely awesome from start and I bet til finish. It's just deserving of another 2-3 playthroughs. Also, play that Fallout 3 DLC man! The Broken Steel adds onto the story and I've been dying to play Mothership Zeta since it came out! You're lucky man!

@awesomeusername: You better BELIEVE I read every, single word. I also can't believe this is a forum in General Discussion that no one else has commented on in days.
Glad to see you've come around on it! I can give you some advice, especially about taking down the Van Graffs: Armor piercing bullets. For the longest time, I only used one ammo type, but when it came time to show the Van Graffs that I wasn't gonna let them kill Cass, I kept getting WORKED over and over. So here's what I did (though this worked because I had a very gun-focussed character): Hole up in the room where the guy who wants you to kill Cass is. There's only one door and they HAVE to come through it to get to you. Get armor piercing rounds and a gun with a high DAM (DPS is less important because a gun with low DAM and high DPS isn't going to do shit-all against their metal armor), trigger the event, and OPEN UP. I had Rex and Cass, as my party at the time, the latter of whom goes down quickly, even on defensive settings, but Rex took down several of the bastards before he got taken down. Hotkey your stimpacks to one of your instant-use buttons (assuming those exist on PS3) and just kill anything that comes through that door. Make sure you're crouching to get better accuracy. Eventually they stop pouring through, and here's where it gets tricky: you have to stand in the doorway, but don't go THROUGH it, to take out as many as you can, and then just mop up. It sounds complicated, and it'll probably take a reload or two, but it's the tactic that worked for me. Also: try and get one of the better dog brains for Rex as it makes a HUGE difference.
Anyway, not much else to say but definitely try to make it through to the end. My experience with the Dam was much more like Ryan's, and much less like Jeff's, in that it was ABSOLUTELY THRILLING. It felt like proper endgame, there's a special radio frequency that lets you hear updates about places you've already visited and what's happening with them (the story about Camp Golf, where I'd trained a group of misfit recruits, was especially moving). So I wish you luck and am glad that you're enjoying the game.

@Undeadpool: Thanks for the advice. I forgot that I have those armor piercing rounds and never though about it. I also didn't know you can put stimpacks in the hot keys. I'll definitely try. I'm mad though because my grandmother, my cousin lives with her, said to bring the PS3 back tomorrow so I don't think I'm going to finish it until I get my own PS3 in June. Oh well, I might just try to beat every main quest tonight as much as I can and hopefully I finish the game. Can you continue the game after you beat it though? Or do you have to start a new game? I hope so because I like when games let you continue our story when you finish the main game.

@awesomeusername: I forgot too! Until I searched my inventory for something, ANYthing, that could allow me to defeat the Van Graffs. I saw the Armor Piercing rounds like they had a spotlight on them. Sorry to hear about your console woes. I actually beat MGS4 under somewhat similar circumstances. A very good friend, who knew I was massively into MGS, brought over his PS3 and copy of MGS4 and basically said "You have 48 hours before I want my console back." Damn good friend.
You cannot play it after you beat it, but I'll tell you right here and right now that the game has a MASSIVELY better ending than the pre-Broken Steel ending of Fallout 3. If you critical-path it, you SHOULD be able to get through it, but you won't get the most out of it.

@Undeadpool: I beat the Van Asses today. I took Cass and hid her and ED-E in that room but after they killed me 3 times, I said fuck it, pulled out the missile launcher and destroyed them. Of course ED-E and Cass were right in front of me as soon as I shot that missile, but that's why followers don't die in the game. Thank you Obsidian! I'd also like to thank missile launchers. But it was easy like that. Having no PS3 It sucks though because it got the YLOD back in August 2009 and since it lost warrant so my mom said she wasn't paying for it, I could've saved up and fixed it myself but then two months later in October, we were moving and I put the PS3 in the box it came in and told my brother to bring it to the truck but the moving guy took it downstairs and wa-la! About 5 hours later when I'm at my new house, I notice there's no PS3 and I ask, no one knows where it went. I got pissed. So since then, I've been going to 2 of my friends house just to play games and I haven't played much. I started playing Dante's Inferno but I never finished it and I played a little bit of Heavy Rain. At my other friends house, I go there now. I've played Batman, Black Ops, and I'm working on Dead Space and Assassins Creed 2. I beat God of War 3 and Brotherhood at my girlfriends and played a little Hot Pursuit and Wheelman. Wheelman is terrible btw. So yeah, I get a little gaming every now and then. But I'm happy I at least get some gaming. But my sisters getting me one when I graduate so I'll be back on track in June. Also, my friend that I play PS3 right now, his Resistance 2 got stuck in the PS3 when it got the YLOD so he just says I have to buy him another copy but he doesn't even care much. It also sucks that you can't play the game after you beat it. I hate when games do that. But since I won't be beating it, I'll just wait til I get my PS3 so I don't have a time limit on playing the game. I love the game but going at it for 6-10 hours a day gets really boring because I don't like playing for that only with just one game. I could do that if I had more games but not one game just sitting there. I get too bored and start to not even care anymore about the game so it's kind of good my moms bringing it back tomorrow. I've had to much Fallout for a week.
