GOTY 2012

Welcome to my top 2012 games. Expect nothing but bias for niche games and Japan. There are some games that got left out of my time table but I'll make a little list out of what I have played.

List items

  • Even though the game kind of died, I can't really say I spent any more time with any other game than this one. I play a lot of anime fighters and fighting games in general. I also play a lot of Persona. This was just a real treat for me. As someone that played the hell out of Persona 4, the story was just an absolute delight. They kept all the character bonds that I've attached myself too and the introduction of Labrys was great. The ending kind of pissed me off and there were times when doing too many story modes destroyed my mind.

  • One thing about the Tales rpgs are that they are so chock-full of cliches. This tale about friendship is no different. There is literally nothing in this game that you can't predict. That's not what I come to a Tales game for though. I come for the solid battle system which never disappoints me and hunting down every little sidequest. Above all, the characterization that is brought in every game. I love every character in this game and it's nice to just watch their interactions after a battle.

  • Another niche little Visual Novel/Puzzle game. After playing 999, I already came in with nothing but absolutely high expectations for the story and the characters. One thing I like about Visual Novels are feeling first hand what you feel. The feeling of spite/sadness when someone betrays you but once you find someone that allies, it is absolutely great. Also when I'm the one betraying, the characters make it easy for me to feel like a dirtbag. I'm sorry Tenmyouji! The writers made a character for us to hate and they succeeded. Much like 999, they teased me with bad ending after bad ending and even the good endings weren't that great. But the true ending more than made it up with the twists and turns. The puzzles made me feel like a genius but there were a couple that were utter bullshit and I found myself switching to easy and reloading my save. Overall, I really like the story even though I was super-sadfaced for the ending.

  • Pretty much the perfect GTA-esque game but with batman style fighting. I loved the gameplay and all the skill trees. I didn't care much for the guns and found myself running at dudes and dying unfortunately. The story was average but I like Wei Shen enough to not really care. There are so many collectables in this fucking game. As I dated girls and seeing all those treasure boxes strayed me from the story missions for like a week. The Karaoke is very simple but I can't remember how many hours I spent singing "All Out of Love." Just wreaking havoc in the world of Sleeping Dogs is fun too. With my 26 jump kick streak before the cops came and I had to split.

  • FTL is pretty much everything I want in a space sim. The frustration from fighting in a solar flare for the 7th time from dealing with all the nebula sectors. That feeling of having absolutely no fuel and fighting every ship until you get fuel. I probably would not like the game as much as I do now if it weren't so frustrating.

  • I'm sorry I had to do this. Screw everyone because Cherry Tree High Comedy Club is the best game in the world. The game is very brief and shallow, the story is kind of iffy but I fucking love Miley and all her crazy friends. The game is like Persona without all that fighting nonsense to get in the way.

  • Okay I lied, this is the best game in the world. I dare someone to find another game where a Sika Deer can drop kick a fucking beagle and come home to a nice prime lady by the end of the year. Tokyo Jungle is the perfect blend of crazy Japan and nice concepts. I did find my patience for the game slowly dwindle because all the cool animals were locked behind bars. Being with your pack of Promeranians and sending them off as decoys feels hilariously devious and I can say that it was a great joy to have this brought over.

  • Katawa Shoujo is a dating sim with disabled girls. Oh sure there's all that stigma for VN's as sex games but the story is charming and the characters are cute and quirky. I only played through a couple of routes before I forgot about it but writing this makes me want to go straight back into it.

  • The most I can say about Paper Mario Sticker Star is that it's disappointing. I found that the battle system relying on stickers was a neat change at first but grew old real quick and the lack of party members was the part that really bummed me out. The heart is in the right place though, the game felt real Paper Mario. The fighting is still similar to old Paper Mario games and the slot is a nice addition to the battle system.

  • Pokemon Conquest is a really nice addition to the Pokemon franchise. I really enjoy the little micromanaging of warlords and Pokemon. As someone who has played a lot of Sengoku Era based games and anime it felt weird seeing Pokemon in this setting. The SRPG part of it could be a little more challenging but the part after the main story was a great delight of challenge. This is game is just plain fun. It has enough of the Pokemon and enough of the SRPG to leave me satisfied.

  • Honorary Mention goes to Project DIVA F. The best game I own on the Vita. It could easily be #5 but I won't go with the Japan release copout. Basically it's a rhythm game. Imagine Elite Beat Agents combined with Nintendogs all covered in vocaloid goodness.
