They should really release this game for PC, but unfortunately I think Ed Boon doesn't believe in PC gaming. He had nothing to do with any of the MK games that came out on PC, all of them were outsourced as far as I know. Even MK4 on PC which pretty much was a direct port of the arcade version (outside of the lower res graphics) was not handled by Midway.

I think you're better off sucking it up and picking up an Xbox 360 on the cheap if you really want to play this game (and you should-- as well as many of the other great games that haven't come to PC over the last 5 years like Red Dead Redemption). I know during this holiday season you could have spent as little as $160 in Canada to get a 4gb Xbox 360 console + MK9 brand new.

And btw, MK9 is still a fantastic looking game. Its insane that such a good looking game running on Unreal Engine 3 is running at 60FPS and actually has colours! I predict it will be one of those games that will still look good 5 years from now.

I still prefer Sony's XMB. The 360 can "redesign" they dash all they want, but it continues to be the same shit regardless. The PS3 gets me quick access to my pictures, videos, music, and games... no ads, no weird swiping effect that fucks with my eyes. Also, the PS3 supports so many video formats, I have tons of HD shows/movies/home videos loaded on it's hard-drive, and a bunch of my high-res photos. The 360 still doesn't let you load stuff on it, you have to use a thumbdrive. It's photo playback isn't as good as the PS3's, and it supports way less video formats. The PS3's XMB my look very plain, but it's fast, to the point, and functions very well for my needs. I don't need a useless avatar bouncing around to make me happy.

You need to use Windows 7 windows media centre, but with that the 360 supports more formats than the PS3. Basically anything that you can play on your PC you can stream to your 360 using WMC.

I'm compelled to do a super bump here because I don't think there was a clear explanation of who was who.

Solid Snake is Big Boss' son. Hes a genetic clone of Big Boss. Solid Snake is also a twin brother of Liquid Snake. Solidus Snake is another clone of Big Boss (the third clone), but he is genetically the same as Big Boss (so he looks the exactly same) whereas Solid and Liquid were modified slightly. All 3 clones have accelerated aging issues. Solid Snake (aka Old Snake) is only 42 when the events of MGS4 happen but he looks much older because of the aging. Solidus Snake was likely in his 30s when MGS2 happened, but he also looked much older than he actually was.

------------------------------

The Boss was Big Boss' mentor. She was a World War 2 hero. At some point she gave birth on the battlefield to Ocelot, and thats how she got her scar. The father of her child was The Sorrow, and she ended up having to kill The Sorrow (a Russian) on the battlefield at some point. She died in 1964 at the hands of Big Boss.

Big Boss (aka Naked Snake, aka Jack; protagonist of MGS3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker; antagonist of Metal Gear 1 & 2) was 29 in 1964 (MGS3) when he had to perform Operation Snake Eater as part of the FOX unit. He was extremely bitter with the way things played out because he was tricked into killing The Boss just to save America's ass for delivering nukes to a lunatic (Colonel Volgin).  He eventually leaves FOX

In 1970 (Portable Ops) he is kidnapped and held in a base on the coast of Columbia by FOX because its believed that Big Boss has part of the philosopher's legacy (an enormous amount of money, something which was to be retrieved during Operation Snake Eater). During this time he meets Roy Campbell and together they escape and recruit soldiers to form what would become the successor to the FOX unit, FOXHOUND. The FOX unit was disbanded after 1970.

In 1972, Major Zero (who ran Operation Snake Eater in 1964) had initiated a project to create a clone of Big Boss because he was considered to be the perfect soldier. During that time, EVA (the female spy that Big Boss works with during Operation Snake Eater) gives birth to Liquid Snake and Solid Snake. Solidus Snake is born after 1974 using another method of cloning.

Peace Walker occurs during 1974 after Big Boss has left FOXHOUND and The Patriots (an organization to influence the world set up by Ocelot, Big Boss, Major Zero, SIGINT aka Donald Anderson, Para-Medic aka Dr Clark, and Eva), upset at the way Major Zero is running things at the CIA. Kaz Miller (aka McDonald Miller) and Big Boss end up forming a Private Military Corperation called MSF. This PMC ends up turning into Outer Heaven. The public does not know that Big Boss is running Outer Heaven at this time.

Big Boss returns to command FOXHOUND sometime before 1995.

Solid Snake joins FOXHOUND and in 1995 hes given his first mission, to infiltrate Outer Heaven and rescue Grey Fox. He ends up discovering Metal Gear, and destroys it. Big Boss then reveals himself to Solid Snake as the leader of Outer Heaven, and its then that Solid Snake defeats him in battle, and with Big Boss apparently dead, Snake escapes and Outer Heaven is blown to pieces with an air strike.

In 1999 Solid Snake is sent on a mission to Zanzibar land where it was suspected another Metal Gear was being developed. This time hes commanded by McDonald Miller (aka Kaz). He finds Grey Fox is the pilot of the Metal Gear and defeats him. Big Boss appears again, still alive as a partial cyborg (the same technology that Raiden and Grey Fox eventually have in them), and reveals himself to be Solid Snake's father. Solid Snake torches Big Boss with a flame thrower.

In 2005, the Shadow Moses incident occurs, when Liquid Snake, the twin brother of Solid Snake and son of Big Boss, demands to get the remains of Big Boss so he can create an army of genetically modified soldiers enhanced with Big Boss' DNA. Shortly before Solid Snake is sent on the mission, Liquid Snake kills McDonald Miller and impersonates him when talking to Snake over the codec during Snake's mission. Solid Snake, unknowingly is carrying a virus called FOXDIE which has been targeted to kill Liquid Snake, and eventually Liquid Snake succumbs to the virus.

After the Zanzibar land incident in 1999, Big Boss' body is retrieved by the Patriots, and his mind is hooked into the Patriots network so that Major Zero can show off his creation to Big Boss. Big Boss is in a hibernation state until sometime between 2009 and 2014 when hes rescued by Raiden and EVA (aka Big Mama). Hes put back together by using body parts from Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake. He meets Solid Snake in 2014 and is killed by the FOXDIE virus that Solid Snake has been carrying since Shadow Moses.

Heres some visuals of the different Snakes:

Row 2: Solid Snake (MGS2), Young Solid Snake (MGS4), Solid Snake (MGS4)
Row 3: Liquid Snake (MGS)

--------------

Interesting trivia (or not): The Smash Bros Brawl model of Snake was totally messed up. It had the head of Big Boss and the body of Solid Snake. That could be one of the reasons why some people are confused as to who Snake is.

Jacksons kids are now apparently the owners of around 200 un published Jackson songs- damn that guy could right- and so i can't wait to hear them for years to come long after his passing.
"
SEGA officially dropped MJ but all signs point to his music being in there still. The PC version of the Sonic Collection is where they changed around 6 songs, all of which were rumoured to be by MJ, but since then all releases have not replaced those songs. Even recently Naka-san didn't deny it (said he'd tell all when the time was right) and SEGA's condolence statement hints at it too.

Surprised I haven't seen any mention (at least not in the last 5 pages) of MJ's involvement in writing the Sonic 3 soundtrack. SEGA claims all of his music was dropped completely during the late stages of development (when the molestation allegations came out), but many of MJ's production team is still credited and quite a few tracks bare a strong resemblance (not just in terms of sound but chord progression) including one that was released a few years after Sonic 3 came out. Digital samples were dumped from the ROM and at least 3 of them are directly from released MJ songs. When certain team members are asked they deny it, others say no comment.

And ACTUALLY, they DID NOT down-port the engine for LCS/VCS.  GTA3 and Vice City were built on Renderware whereas LCS and VCS were built on a proprietary engine that Rockstar uses for all their PSP games."
That is something that I did not know-- but we're getting caught up in semantics here, Renderware is middleware. The THPS3 GBA port (which took the same approach as THPS2) did not use Renderware either (the console versions did), but it still was nearly a 1:1 down port (including level design, characters, etc).

By the way, one of the reasons why I bring this up is because Jeff did give good reviews to THPS2 on GBA and GTA:LCS on PSP. Just found it odd that he didn't bring up that straight up down ports could be good when talking about the Dead Space rail shooter on Wii.

"I realize Metal Gear Ghost Babel and GTA LCS/VCS contain different scenarios or stories but they are using the same gameplay mechanics. They are quite close to the original experience."
For one, you've obviously never played Metal Gear 2.  For two, Vice City Stories (can't attest to LCS, as I've never played it) has a completely different dynamic from any other GTA game, not to mention that the city itself has been subtly tweaked in ways.  If the fact that the story and characters are completely different doesn't make it a port (which it does), than that does.
"
I have played Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Obviously MG,MG2,MGS,MGS2,MGS3,MGSPO,MGS4 all have common threads. MG2 was a little slower and a little more punishing if I'm not mistaken. The Enemy AI (for MGS GB) in the alert phase is a little closer to the PSX game. The UI is also designed to be a little more similar to MGS. And I don't think you could run diagonally in MG2 either ;)

As for LCS/VCS, they offer the same gameplay experience on the PSP that GTA3 and VC did on the PS2. Its the same engine with a slightly altered city (for a different time period). They down ported the engine (and the gameplay that comes along with it) nearly 1:1, but put a fresh coat of paint on it with a new story.
