BeardDuder's 2022 GOTY!

As I sit here at work on this most wonderful of days, Festivus for those unaware is December 23rd, I have decided to make the cut-off and put out my GOTY list. It sure has been a weird as-hell year IRL and I think in the gaming space as well. I played a good mix of older and newer games as well as *knock on glass* I might have kicked the Destiny habit. (Please for the love of everything DO NOT go back to last year's list where I said the same thing.) Heck, I even played Half-Life for the first time ever this year so it can't be that bad!

I did try to do better about keeping a list of everything I played this year so that hopefully by the time GOTY came around I wouldn't anything. I started off the year catching up on some of the things I missed in '21 like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5. Also touched on some things I picked up in the steam sale/Epic free things like Loop Hero and Crypt of the NecroDancer all while playing the new expansion of Destiny 2. (Again, we will not talk about what happened here. Okay? Thank you and moving on.....) We also watched that Witcher show on Netflix and like a lot of people so I picked up The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and put a few hours into it before putting it down.

In the second half of the year, I just played a big ol' mish-mash of games and just tried to have fun. I was also way more involved with the kiddo's band stuff at school and that was just a huge time sink that got more and more as the weeks went on until....it was just over. Then we rolled right into being sick, then the holidays, then some nappy IRL junk, and all of that leading up to today. Now one HUGE omission on my list will be Elden Ring. Never super been a souls person, and I know I know this one goes way beyond that and is just incredible. Just never got the draw to play it, hopefully, I'll just go for it and we might see it at the top of 2023's list. Also on that list might be a few others I never got around to but are currently sitting in my steam cart/game pass library like Neon White, Nobody Saves the World, and Pentiment. In that cart is also Half-Life 2 so I bet we see that on the list as well.

So without any further ado, goodbye *kiss* and goodnight, bang! I will wish you all a happy (insert your preferred holiday here) and present the list of the best games I played this year. If you would like to see the list of everything I played in 2022 head over here to take a look. BeardDuder's Games I Played in 2022

Cheers!!

PS: I would be in big trouble if I forgot to say if you are not a part of the GB discord then what are you doing? We have a pretty great community over there and would love for you to join! Here is a handy link to the Discord invite!! Full disclosure I am a mod over there, but am just a duder like you.

  • I mean come on. This one like Hades was just #1 with a bullet. I got into VS a bit later than most folks I know. I think I picked this up in late April and it's been a staple all year long. I sunk a ton of hours into it without even knowing that time had passed. Every run is different and just the way Poncle would put out little updates every few weeks just kept me coming back time and time again. Also, flipping $3?!?! when I picked it up that was a steal and at the $5 I think it is now is just an incredible purchase. I grabbed the iOS version a few weeks ago and plan to start all over again just for the fun of it.

  • This dude came out of nowhere. I am a musician and I just LOVE rhythm games (as you can tell by my #2 & 3). The demo for this dropped during the 'summer games whatever it's called' and I sunk a whole bunch of hours into "perfecting" all of those levels. The full game came out a week or two ago and it's been a true joy to see all of the neat ways this game plays with the simple concept of hitting a button in time with the music. Also, damn dude, this soundtrack rips. When I hit the "shopping" level in the first world I just cranked my speakers and played it over and over. The OST is on Spotify and I suggest you give it a listen.

  • Like Melatonin, this was one of those 'summer games w/e' demo drops that I played a ton! Then it hit game pass in September and I dropped everything until I 100% this dude. Just a decent shooter but glue every aspect of the game to being in tune with the music and the magic just happens. I say if you have game pass go give this a try or at the very least look up a let's play.

  • Okay, the super negatives first. #1. I think I only heard one? "Boy" in the whole game. Not cool guys. #2. The puzzle stuff with the side folks just telling you what to do was a bummer. Outside those, I super enjoyed this game. Hell, it was the only game to make me dig out my PS4 Pro and play a console game. The game ran really well on the pro and I think I only ran into a kitten's pawful of tech issues. I enjoyed 2018 and this was more of that. Good storytelling and I am also very glad they did not break this into 3 parts. I will warn you of one weirdness I had, I finished the game out of order. The very very very last side quest that will take you to credits I did before I found the last collectible. I thought it was a trigger to open something I was missing and no...I was just dumb and did not look in the right area. So I "finished" the game, got credits, and should have just been able to turn it off. But No.... so don't be dumb like me.

  • My dudes.....Never would I have played this game on its own. Just not something I would on the outside looking at it every vibe with. But after soo many folks were raving about it I gave it a show and whoa. This was very cool. Just a fun little run around old school collectathon. Do this and this happens. Very cool and hope this leads to a trend of cool smaller games.

  • Tunic eh? What a weird little game. I enjoyed most of this game and just the little tiny ways it will lead you into discovering what to do or how something works was rad. The manual was rad. The art was rad. I did run into a huge hang-up where I needed the "Hookshot" to progress and just could not find it. I went over every square inch of the map and just....nothing. So I had to turn to a guide and turns out I walked into the area very early on and just walked right back out and forgot that there was anything over there. After that, I went and finished the game solo, but I did want to see everything the game had but did not want to beat my head into the wall. I knew what/how it all worked so I decided to go back to the guide to help me finish up that golden path junk. Again, another cool little game that continues the trend.

  • Yo, why did it take me 13ish years to play Half-Life? Nothing more to be sad about half-life that people don't know. I heard that Black Mesa was super close to the original with only a few gameplay tweaks and then expanding on the last area. So played it this was and whoa.... Who knew, good game is good. Like I said up top, I've got Half-Life 2 in my steam cart so I bet we see it next year.

  • An older game I know, but it did hit iOS this year. :D

I played this a bit on PC and enjoyed it, but just felt like this would be a good in-bed game. Turns out I was right! Played this for months and only put it down after I finished everything there was to do. A very cool spin on the deck builder/card game idea.

  • Cult game is Cult. The farming/cult side of this game is what really grabbed me. The combat stuff is cool and enjoyable but it's a means to an end. Enjoyed my time with this a "beat it" w/e that means anymore in the age of forever games. I'd go back if a DLC or something come but okay with leaving my little cuties to live out their days in my steam cloud saves.

  • I hate this game. This just happens to tickle that part of my brain to keep me playing. When I win it's the best! When I lose I just get salty and want to keep playing till I win one. I've yet to sink any $$$ into the game, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. I'm in the process of trying to just not worry about the "cubes" and just play for fun. I think when the non-competitive playlist comes I'll be sunk way more in because the con of playing a silly deck or just playing cards because you need to for a task will be gone. If they can keep the fairly balanced nature of the game going I think it's got a long tail on it.
