...today I was fortunate enough to visit a TV station in Poland where they are starting production on a polish war film. So far, I was not turned on either. However, I was told it was being filmed in 3D. I had to see how that worked. Turns out the biggest impact is in the filming operaitons. You see, now the director, the director of photography (DoP as I was told) and other important people have to sit in a room watching tv screens whilst wearing 3D glasses. Everything they want done, changed or altered has to be relayed to on-set staff by walkie talkie. It is like controlling a robot through a computer and controlling that computer with another computer through the internet. So, the old film director (apparently very regarded as one of the Polish Classic directors) is abstaining from his old habits and learning how to micro-manage his visions and thoughts through a walkie talkie. The technology is impressive and when its place and use in modern entertainment becomes stone, this will all be streamlined and cost effective. They even had a 3D camera hidden in a small box that allowed a '3D video from a running soldiers perspective' - but it all came to the dark control room with all the important people sporting rather amusing glasses.

I am impressed with what I saw, the actors had to move differently, the sound was being captured at several points for every scene and the entire production will cost £4m (about $6m). When I asked how much of that was to accommodate the 3D technology and the extra people needed to act as the director's 'limbs' the entire control room glanced at me and I was looking at a silent room full of glaring 3D glasses. My answer. At that point it was best for this English traveller to make a quick three dimensional exit.
