Great piece! My submission for your list of hopefully-not-forgotten pieces of media is the Arcane Kids' Zineth.
Zineth is one of my favorite games of all time. It's a deep dive into movement mechanics in 3d games and also a weird look at social media. It was a student game made by the group that would go on to make Perfect Stride and Bubsy 3d. Everyone should absolutely check it out, as it's both free and magical. http://zinethgame.tumblr.com/
Zenith is sooooo goooooooood. Definitely my favorite Arcane Kids joint.
The one time I infiltrated a player's FOB, it was completely empty. There wasn't a single soldier anywhere.
It was very eerie. Snake just took a stroll around the FOB, looking for goobs to no avail. Eventually I found the base's core with some difficulty, and waltzed right in and won.
I always wanted to go back and check out more of the FOB system, but the idea of getting caught and a consequential invasion of my own base made me very anxious.
Maybe I'll go back and invade some more bases now that I've been finished with the main game.
Samantha is the best. I wish she had her own podcast!
Also, as a kid, the pledge of allegiance was always weird to me. By the time I was around 10 years old, I was already becoming an atheist. The idea of pledging to a nation under God felt very invasive to me even then.
On top of reciting the US pledge everyday, we were expected to do the Texas state pledge directly afterward. It's short, includes "one state under God", and rather than keeping your hand on your heart you have to do this weird open palm thing, like serving food from a platter. Many teachers would chastise you for refusing to do the Texas pledge. I chose to sit down most of the time.
