I am going to leave this open until the end of the day in the hopes of catching a straggler or two.

Clue 1 was pretty brutal here. Sometimes the first clue is a dead giveaway and sometimes it's just like "do you recognize this random patch of terrain?" Though here there was something more to it than that.

@allthedinos: It was pretty long ago.

When is the last time Bioware launched a game that didn't disappoint a significant portion of their fans? Mass Effect II in 2010? That's 13 years. There are lots of important developers that didn't last that long overall.

Some of the games after that have their fans (I liked Mass Effect III quite a bit despite its issues) but games that seemed like a misstep now look like the start of a slow and accelerating collapse.

Bioware was such a good studio that it took EA much longer than usual to destroy it!

I've been playing Army of Ruin and Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde thanks to this list. They're both very good though in different ways. Spirit Hunters is simpler in almost every way but also more skill-based in terms of moment to moment gameplay, where it really relies on good positioning and careful aiming of your skills to survive. Obviously build matters, but I've found that almost every build is workable as long as you have the basic balance of crowd control, range, and some kind of big damage attack fo the bruisers. The skill web is huge and a little intimidating and there are some cool twists on some of the weapons, but it's mostly manageable. I don't love how the game looks but it's not like it's notably ugly. It's just sort of average and pretty flat looking.

Army of Ruin on the other hand is just a massive broken mess...in a good way. First of all it is the only one of these games that looks like a "modern game" (or a game that could only be done on modern hardware) with some really nice mid-poly models and a lot of more advanced graphical effects. Secondly it has just a massive amount of content, with 24 characters and over a hundred weapons to unlock, and though some of the characters are palette swaps the weapons are all unique. Thirdly because it has weapon evolutions and "trinkets" (non-weapon passives that modify stats or give you some ability like freezing all enemies on screen every 30 seconds) you can get some massively broken builds. Builds where you can just walk around the map destroying anything you can see, like you can in Vampire Survivors if your build breaks, but without the end of the stage intensity ramp up that makes that game still tense at the end even with a broken build. This isn't a bad thing but it gives the game a very different feel. Additionally I've found that while fancy footwork and careful maneuvering can keep you alive in Spirit Hunters if your build isn't strong enough you will die in Army of Ruin. You can keep yourself alive for awhile and maybe weather a particularly tough wave of monsters that abates, but without sufficient damage output you will eventually die. It makes it a game much more about your build (which is somewhat RNG dependent) than your positioning skill. Again, not a bad thing, just a difference.

Both games are really really good and show that this genre has some legs. Interestingly they both have a "super move" tied to a button press, so they're not strict autoshooters. In some ways these iterations of the genre feel like a combination of Gauntlet and clicker games, which I guess is what Vampire Surviors really is. But they provide the "numbers go up" dopamine hit of clickers along with the frantic feeling of being overwhelmed in Gauntlet. And they both have a TON of challenges and things to unlock (Army of Ruin has a frankly overwhelming amount.) They're also insane values, especially Army of Ruin, which has a graphical fidelity I would expect from a $20 or $30 game, not an $8 game. Especially given the sheer amount of stuff in it.

Hello and thanks for your interest in the Unsanctioned Unofficial Game Pass Game Club. If you don't know what it is you can see more about the Game Club here. There is also where you can suggest games for future cycles, though this current vote will stay with the games listed below.

To vote in this thread simply list your top two choices with one labeled choice 1 and the other labeled choice 2. Choice 1 gets 3 points and choice 2 gets 1 point. The game with the highest point count wins. If there is a tie then I will break it, but I will not be voting otherwise.

You can vote even if you have not participated in the Game Club (and voting does not obligate you to participate but we ask that you not vote if you have no interest in participating) and you do not need to vote to participate in this or future cycles. You are also free to vote for games you are interested in and not participate if that game does not win, though it's more fun if people are willing to try games they may not be initially interested in.

Voting will close on August 28, when the results will be announced. I will tabulate the votes then so you may change your vote at any time prior by editing your post. Please do not make multiple voting posts in this thread, though discussion is encouraged. You can feel free to campaign for the game you want to win and make arguments why it is the best choice.

Games for which there appears to be interest will remain on the list in subsequent weeks but may be cycled out if we reach a point where there are too many nominated game for orderly voting. Games removed from the list will remain eligible to be nominated for future cycles at which point they will be put back on the list.

NOMINATED GAMES:

You Suck at Parking (Vehicle obstacle racing game where the goal is to park. Approximately 9 hours long.)

Shadow Warrior 3: Over the top FPS game continuing the revival of the irreverent Shadow Warrior Series (Approximately 5.5 hours long)

Ghost Song: Metroidvania where you explore a creepy and dead world. Very much leans to the Metroid side. (Approximately 9 hours long)

Infinite Guitars: A cross genre rhythm game RPG where you use the power of music to save the world (Approximately 7.5 hours long)

Goat Simulator: A wacky, janky, physics toy game where you control a goat in an imperfect simulation where you do some un goatlike things (approximately 2 hours long for the 'main story')

Amnesia: The Bunker: The latest in the Amnesia series of games where you hide from things that go bump or sploosh in the night and try to escape with your life and your sanity (Approximately 5 hours long)

The Big Con: An adventure game where you scam and steal your way across the American landscape of the 1990s. Will there be Zima? Probably not. (Approximately 4 hours long.)

Planet of Lana: 2D puzzle platformer with a chill sci-fi alien exploration vibe. (Approximately 4.5 hours long.)

Eastern Exorcist: 2D action combat game based on Chinese mythology. Somewhat janky with a dodgy translation. (Approximately 5 hours long.)
