Cloud saves and why I now care about PSN +

No Caption Provided

So up until now I honestly have not cared one bit about PSN +. I primarily play the Xbox 360 and Live has been all that I needed and I have gladly payed for it for the past 7 years or so. Well recently I moved my Live profile to a USB thumb drive, which then corrupted said profile. So I figure no big deal I will go ahead and delete my profile and recover it. Well silly me going too fast, the system did not recognize that I had hit up and so I ended up deleting profile and all items. So in this whole process I ended up losing every save file I had since the Xbox 360 launch.

So now Sony is adding this fancy cloud storage for save files for it's PSN + members. Boy would this feature have been handy to have on Xbox Live for when I accidentally deleted all of my save files. So for the first time since it's debut I am pining for a feature that PSN + members get. I really hope that Microsoft decides to implement a similar feature into Live, but until then I think I might have to become a PSN + member also. Kudos to Sony for this feature and I hope to see more awesome features like this in the future.

I don't think it's perfect in it's execution, but I love the direction it moves console gaming into.

This would have been way useful if they implemented it BEFORE my last PS3 died with my years worth of saves on it. :<

Yeah it sounds like it's just some space to upload saves to - your games can't directly read the save data that's saved in the cloud.

If that's the case it's kinda silly - uploading and downloading saves is kinda pointless except for transferring saves across systems or hard drives.

@benjaebe: That's different text than what I read before, which makes it seem like something that must be done manually.

No, it's cloud saving.

" I never delete my profile before recovering.  From what I heard of PSN+'s online storage, it's just that, online storage, not actual cloud saves. It wouldn't be useful to me at all. "

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.

I love this feature since I want to try and get my 60gig fixed now so I can easily bring all the save from there onto my slim.

@Infininja:  Even if Microsoft were to make it just online storage allowing me to make a back up of my saves I would be a really happy camper.
