My Game of the Year 2023
By bondfish 0 Comments
Let's first talk about the games I currently play and how they were this year.
DOTA 2.: Big changes this year and for the better. The map is bigger, most stuff to do on the map, and great stuff all around
Marvel Snap: Also good updates for the UI for PC and the new cards made this fun to play all year for me again
Overwatch 2: Not enough changes since it came out. I don't care about the PV. Some reworks were okay not great and the battlepass and monotazation still sucks. I will say the heroes and the maps were generally good overall.
I wrote most of these reviews shortly after I played them with a few exceptions, but I wanted to do this so I got my thoughts right away as opposed to remembering at the end of the year. Now onto the list!
25.Sports Story
This game was just to ambitious for its own good and its just a lack luster game with neat ideas, but lacks overall polish and direction. I would give this game a pass if the golf was as good as the first game, however its not the case. The golf is more simplified taking out being able to spin the ball and alter the direction of the shot, which is a weird and bad decision, since one they already should have the engine/code for it and two makes it just super boring to play the golf. Not only that but every single golf course lacks any type of direction and just seems to be made from a course random generator with path and obstacles all over the place without any though put into them. The story is bland and the pay off of the ending is the more mundane unfulfilling ending of game I have ever seen. The positives of this game is that the music is still very good and the charm of the game is great. I liked running around these worlds and exploring, its just that the objectives are boring, bland and sometimes aren’t very clear what you are supposed to do. I can go on, and on with all the mistakes this game has, but to sum it all up is just it was very clearly rushed and is missing the finishing touches which makes it seem more like someone first attempt at making a video game and showing it to you with out one person reviewing the final product. Not an awful or even bad game overall, but the definition of a 5/10. Very disappointing.
24.Alone in the Dark The New Nightmare GBC
Play this on the NSO and its a neat and decent little game. Not every long or too difficult. Some really good sprit work in this for sure. Some of the puzzles can be a bit out there, and wondering around can be confusing. Also you can soft lock yourself from beating the game due to you lose when either you run not only out of health, but also ammo. That said if you have like an hour to an hour and a half to kill and you have NSO this is work checking out.
23.Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone PS1
Decided to replay this game after rewatching the movie as I haven’t done either in a while. And I don’t think I beat it and now I did. Its a short game, with some frustrating parts, like Gringots, the flying, and the drowsy troll. The game is okay, more for nostalgia for more and due to the length if you are a Potter fan and haven’t played this one then check it out.
22. The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker HD
I came in thinking that this Zelda would be my favorite since Phantom Hourglass was the first Zelda game that I played all the way through, and one of my favorites, however I was extremely disappointed by this. Zelda games continue to be overhyped which does add to the disappointment as well. I will start off with the positives. That I like the art style, charm, and humor of this game, however it basically stops there. The major issue that I have with this game is that is extremely boring and tedious to sail the ocean, pull out the windwaker, switch the the wind direction, only to sail to a single small island a tiny square. I am not going to fault the game due to the limitations of the gamecube, but those small islands are pretty unexciting and uninspired. The two dungeons where you have to control the partner also are just not fun for being tedious. I should have to pull out the windwaker, put in the directions everytime I need to swap to the other party member. This game really doesn’t do anything all that great for a Zelda game other than its style, which is why I have a hard time with people saying its their favorite or top one for reasons other than nostalgia.
21. Alan Wake
Played this game because I think Alan Wake 2 looks pretty good and wanted to check out the first one, and man this is the most 6/10 game. The combat would be good if the flashlight didn’t have ammo. I found it very annoying to keep reloading it even though I never got the point where the batteries matter. The drive sections feel awful to control and it also is not that fun and seems kinda pointless. The story is overly confusing and I still don’t understand it even after beating it. I am actually having a hard time as to why people like this game, maybe it was a time and place thing when it came out, but it didn’t hit the mark for me. Alan's voice is also very unnatural and contrasts with the other characters since he doesn’t seem like a good voice actor or even trying. I am still interested in the second game since it seems to be different than this one.
20. Cook, Serve, Delicious 3
This more of the same as the last 2 games. I like the level system in this and the upgrades as well. I do still need to play a bit more of this, but having a hard time going back to it because I just don’t like the aesthetic of this game at all. From the music to the design it seems pretty soulless. I still would much prefer some stages where they give you the menu like it the second game to mix it up instead of you choosing the menu every time. Not a terrible game by any means, just more of the same. Also I am playing on Switch and there is frame rate issues when playing on a TV that absolutely makes it almost unplayable.
19. Ys Origin
I got this game pretty much because I heard its a good starting point for the Ys franchise, even though I played a bit of Ys 8 and stopped playing after about 2 hours. None the less this is a fun little game. I played my first play through on Normal and the other two on easy just to beat the game. I will say Normal has a challenge, but glad I did it on easy due to you playing the same exact levels in each play though. This is the games fault, while I liked the different play styles of the characters the actual game doesn’t make it that way with each character instead you play the game doing the same levels and hearing the same music over and over again. Once I realized this on my second play through I was disappoint. The story was also pretty meh, decided to skip some it as well. Overall its am okay game.
18. Axiom Verge 2
I enjoy the first game quite a bit and was excited for the second yet when it came out not a lot of people were talking about it so I was skeptical and passed it on release. When I saw it on PS Plus for free decided to of course play it. This game is fantastic overall and more enjoyable than the first. There different visuals makes this game a joy to look at and the music is also great. This is more an an exploration type of game with no boss really and it is a quite easy game to play and just enjoy. Some of the backtracking did confuse me especially after I didn’t play it after a few days forgot some items I had and where certain things were. This game deserved to get more praise at the time and more people need to give the sequel a shot.
17.Goldeneye 007
Played this game as a kid at friends houses over the years since I never own and N64 and my thoughts were its fun, but its not great. And playing it fully through that is still the same. The controls are still super clunky even with the NSO version. The objects at times can also be unclear of what you are supposed to do and grab and where to go. Its a fun run and gun shooter and with multiplayer its still a decent time as well.
16.Omega Strikers
I really was digging this game for the first week! It was a ton of fun until it was like week 2 or 3. I played ranked and the ranked matches are way too long. It should be best 2 out of three instead of first to 3 wins. I also kept losing a lot of games from some reason and unranked too, which made the game very unenjoyable and I ultimately decided to stop playing.
15.Mario & Luigi’s: Bowser’s Inside Story
I never finished this game and always wanted to go back to it and now I have. I remember being super boring and long at the beginning of the game and that still stands true. There is a ton of dialogue and cutscene that slow down the pacing and the gameplay immensely. That and packed with not great music and only what seems like 5 music tracks in the whole game can make the game seem like you played for an hour when its been 5 mins. The controls during battles when countering attacks works but feels stiff sometimes. That being said overall as a whole this game is just okay. Its pretty easy, the minigames and stylus mechanics are meh, and there isn’t much variety when it comes to area, but thats due to playing both as Bowser walking around and Mario and Luigi visiting the areas inside him, but even the areas inside him never felt different enough to make them memorable. If you are a fan of these games I am sure you would enjoy this one.
14.Castlevania Dracula X
This is an okay Castlevania, the music is good, graphics are also good too for the snes. Where it lacks is the level design and that it is difficult. The placement of the enemies and their attacks and be a real pain and a turn off to make you quit fast. I started this last year got frustrated on the third level and stopped. I came back and brutally made my way through and would I play this one again, maybe? I would play the others one over it for sure. If this controlled like Castlevania 4 it would be a better game and its a disappointment that it does not.
13. Metroid Fusion
This game overall is pretty good. Its a fun short experience with great visuals and music for the GBA. I don’t have much to say about this, even though its short halfway through once I got the spider boss and after that I was pretty much done with the game. That boss and level design is really really bad. Not to mention the last boss section as well when it came to where the save point was, was annoying. I also find the shooting at the walls thing just dumb. Its not a challenge and its not a good puzzle.
12. The Coin Game
Definitely need to play more of this, but for the first few hours I have been enjoying it. I have been doing the survivor mode so the beginning grind for money is tedious, but awesome fun game with great nostalgic feeling.
11. Dying Light
I got the Switch version and I will say this game runs pretty well and also looks pretty good on the Switch! The game as a whole is pretty okay, it is pretty tough in the beginning and you do need to grind a bit. I never really crafted any weapons since I wasn’t sure if they would be better than the weapons I had, so I would have been nice to see the actual stats. Also when I did craft some weapons I wouldn’t have the items to repair it and it would have been nice to know which items I need to repair them. I will say once you get to the second area I had a lot more fun, the grappling hook was fun to use and made traversing easier and faster. I thought the combat was a bit sloppy and not well executed, but overall this was a fun game even though it is a bit dated with its gameplay mechanics.
10. Baulder’s Gate Dark Alliance HD
This game is pure nostalgia for me and I did get it when it was on sale even though I own a copy. This game is still pretty good. Overall its a solid dungeon crawler loot game and I think where this shines is the Coop. Now I didn’t play it co-op this time, I remember playing it with my brothers and having a blast. I played the Elf to make it more difficult and it sure was. You kind of have to cheat the game by running in circles to kill an enemy or keep going back to the save point after killing a certain amount and it gets tedious. The enemies in this game even on normal deal so much damage and sometimes out of no where and drop you from full health to third of a heal in one hit. If this is nostalgic to you and you want to play it again this is worth a pick up on sale, even if you never played it before grab a friend (to play couch coop because there is no online) its still a good time
9. Metroid Prime Remastered
The game starts off strong and was ultimately enjoying it for the most part until about a little over halfway when the game clearly shows that it was made in 2002. I think overall the game is exactly a metroid in first person and they pull it off for the most part, the puzzle and exploration overall is fun, but the overall back tracking is such a hassell and makes it not as enjoyable. The game would have really benefited from a fast travel, and I understand it is a remaster, but I feel like they still should have added it. Judging the game as a whole without it still hassell because traversing through the levels isn’t fun nor fast. The constant switching guns to unlock doors every time, the respawning enemies, and the morph ball is the fastest way to get around but its useless due to the platforming. The bosses are pretty boring as well as the shooting. Once again I think the nostalgia of people hyping this game up plays a part into this as well. Its by no means a disappointing game due to that its just a dated experience which I would hope Metroid Prime 4 would solve these issue, and I am glad that they did make this game available for the modern age.
8. Resident Evil 2
This game is very good and was quite surprised. I only played both A routes of the characters. The gameplay is challenging on normal, the story is fun too. The issue that I have and the reason why I am not playing the B routes at least at this time is because of the similarities between the Claire and Leon routes. They are pretty much 90% of the same game with very little changed which is not only disappointing, but repetitive. That said I am glad I was able to play this classic game.
7. Infernax
This a great little game. It feels good to play and is a spiritual successor to Simon’s Quest. It does start of tough at first, but the game is actually pretty easy to beat overall. I enjoy the choices and even not knowing when they were going to come on the first play through made the world seem more alive than it actually is. I like all the little secrets that it has from beating the game or by in the world itself. The only real issue that I have is that even with the fast travel spell, moving around the world is a bit slow would have like to see some faster traversal even if it was a code.
6. F-Zero 99
I really really liked this game when it was first out for the first two weeks. A lot of fun, controls great, and looks awesome. I got in this this one pretty hard and once I got my first win is when it started to peal off from it. It also didn’t help that they only had a set amount of tracks and it took too long for the new ones to come out. If the tracks came out weekly it would have have a more longevity to keep the player base. Still a great game, just disappointed how the overall package was handle when it came to the live service
5. Baulder’s Gate Dark Alliance2 HD
Also nostalgic as the first game, this surpasses the first game by a whole lot. The enemies are balanced this time, there are most heroes to chose from, and there is also a workshop to customize weapons and armor. There are a few side quest to do as well not a lot by any means, but its a nice addition from the first game. I played the Barbarian since I played these back to back and I just wanted to hack and slash through the game. Gone was the continuous saves was able to make it to the never save point mostly with no problem, less running around enemies to kill them as well. This game has more abilities to put skill points in than the first, and you also gain levels more easily and faster than the first so you feel like you can max out everything if needed. If you are gonna pick either this one or the first, honestly you can just get this and be fine. It was a great next step into the franchise that sadly didn’t continue after this, and one can only hope what that third game would be and what more iterations they would have added.
4. Vampire Survivors
This game is awesome. From the simple gameplay to all the secrets its a blast to play through and gives you excitement when a surprise comes up when you start making your way through the game and doing the achievements. The only issue that I have is the fact that I really don’t like some of the stuff that can cause seizures while it does effect me in that way it still can hurt my eyes and head to look at so I wish they could solve that issue.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
This is truly an incredible game and a huge step up from Breath of the Wild. It basically fixes almost everything that wasn’t great in Breath of the Wild. The weapons breaking and the punishing early game is fixed, the shrines are better, and the overall systems and abilities are way more fun and much better. I will say the flaws that it does have is that the rewards for the quest and side missions aren't great. You often get a weapon that will break, food, or an item that you will barely use. I think some of the main quests when it comes to getting the armor to get into the area are pretty bad considering the mission is just buy it. That isn’t good nor fun, plus getting the rupees in the game is next to impossible. Overall the game is a lot of fun and is one of the best Zelda games and is the game that Breath of the Wild always wanted to be.
2. Resident Evil 4 HD
This has been on my radar for at least 10 years when I bought a PS2 copy and only played about and hour. I often tried to play it but a few times, but never got past the first hour or so mostly due to other things that came up to play instead. This time I decided to buy the HD version, due to being easier to play and easier to see since playing a PS2 on HD TV doesn’t look great. That said this is one of the best and complete games I have played and they hype around this game is justified. It is challenging, tense, and a fun experience with great level design. The flaws that I have are really just I feel like its a tad long. It does feel to drag in the castle section and by the time I got to the island I felt that it was time to be done. I also did try to play Separate Ways however it just seemed like enemies spawn without ending and I didn’t just want to run through it, plus I was pretty much over the game. Did play the first chapter of it, but was done playing at that point.
1. Dragon Quest XI
This essentially was my frist Dragon Quest game that I have played, besides a few hours in DQ4, and let me say this game is fantastic. The story and the characters are interesting a blast to learn about. The gameplay and turn base is quick and easy to understand what is going on at all times as well. I played on Switch and the game looks great as well. The only few issues that I have are, the crafting isn’t great and can be hard to understand. The side quest are also pretty lack luster as well. Other than that this game is a monster to play super long and lots to do. Even though I beat it for some reason I still wanna go back for more.
