It's definitely a kids game. That's not to say that adults can't have fun with it, of course. I'm an adult. I had loads of fun with the first one and can't wait to dive into 2.0. You just need to be the kind of person that can get into a kids game.
Combat is fun, but it's simple. The toy box is probably where you'll get all of you replay value. If you like futzing around in games like Garry's Mod, you and your friends will have a lot of fun building worlds and games in the toy box for sure. 2.0 is adding a Diablo-style game type you can play around with, so it will feel a lot like MUA.
If you're on the edge about it, maybe grab the 1.0 starter kit. They've been on sale all over the place so it's less of an investment to try it out. All of the 1.0 characters will work in 2.0. I would just glance at some of the 2.0 features, if you go that route, so you know what's going to be different between them.
Yeah I wouldn't worry to much about the console exclusive content. One thing to remember, if you buy the game on ps3/360 digitally, you get a free digital upgrade to ps4/xb1 respectively if you do it by January. So maybe check if your friends are going to be playing on last gen and then buy the game on the new gen system to match it, if it sounds like they'll upgrade this year.
EDIT: also, if anybody wants to fill out their friends list a bit, feel free to add me. I've been an xbox guy forever and, while I bought an xbox one, I'm delving into PSN really for the first time with Destiny so I don't have many friends on there yet. If you see me on, I'm down to play whatever!
I always cringe at the word "gamer". I don't really self-identify like that. Instead I'll say "I play a lot of games." or something along those lines. I don't know that there needs to be a word for someone that plays a lot of games. "Movie buff" always seems a little pejorative, and I never hear someone call themselves a "reader". I dunno man labels are weird.
